  • Editorial: One MMO Down, How Many More to Go?

    In the latest entry in our editorial series From the Editors' Desks, the strength and diversity of the MMO market is examined as yearling MMO Tabula Rasa bites the dust. Can the market continue to produce new products? Take a look:

    If you, like many gamers, are mumbling to yourselves, “Taboo what?” here is a description of the game from the company’s website:

    Tabula Rasa is an intense, fast-paced, sci-fi MMO Game that put you in the middle of the never-ending intergalactic fight for freedom against a hostile alien race called the Bane. Use high-tech weaponry, alien powers, and the help of other Allied Free Sentient (AFS) soldiers to rid the universe of the Bane threat.

    Contrary to this official statement, we can now see that the “never ending fight” has ended. But why did this MMO fail after only 16 months’ operation? That’s right; Tabula Rasa was a MMO that lasted only 16 months, quite a short time compared to most other modern MMO titles.

    Does the MMO market simply have too much competition? Did Tabula Rasa’s gameplay and story stray just a bit too far from the traditional MMO mold? Was it all the fault of poor marketing? Was the game just terrible? Or do we just blame it all on World of Warcraft? Continue Reading...
