  • Army of Two: The 40th Day Preview

If there was ever a game that screamed “bromance” it’s got to be EA Montreal’s upcoming title, Army of Two: The 40th Day. In the sequel to Army of Two, players continue the story of Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem as they battle enemies in the ultra-urban setting of Shanghai. This time around the helmets come off allowing players to connect on a deeper emotional level to Tyson and Elliot. Just the kind of deeper emotional connection one looks for in a third person shooter right?

Kidding aside, early impressions of Army of Two: The 40th Day are decent enough and if you’re familiar with the original title EA has also made improvements to the original title in the sequel.

Army of Two: The 40th Day features an organic cover system that’s fluid allowing players to move from cover to cover. Players must be cognizant of civilians as they traverse the city since they form the basis for the economy system in the game and the more civilians saved from enemy forces, the more money is earned to customize weapons. Players have multiple options for how they go about rescuing folks, in demonstration players could pacify enemies by incapacitating a commanding officer, killing them outright, risking civilian casualties or stage a mock surrender.

The game also has perfect symmetry between players and enemies, everything that you and your partner can do in regards to abilities can be replicated by enemies you come across.

Developers emphasized the moral decision making element of the game and Army of Two: The 40th Day is meant to stimulate conversations among players to come to a decision. In one example of this dynamic, a security guard comes across Tyson and Elliot as they are taking weapons from a Chinese office building. Left with following the order of the guard and leaving the weapons alone or taking them, we decided to take the weapons, resulting in one of the guns misfiring and accidentally shooting the guard in the head. Crumpling to the ground, a family photo flutters out of the man’s pocket featuring a happy photo of his wife and child.

Ultimately player decisions will either benefit or haunt you, although the ramifications were never described in specific detail, i.e. if it would alter the games objectives, storyline or both.

Look forward to 6-8 hours of gameplay, Army of Two: The 40th Day is scheduled to release in December this year.
