Re: Aerial Combat v3.1 Final Released

I wanted to catch up with you on that problem I am having trying to get the new map to run. I do not want to run both maps side by side I just want to run the new map only and I want to get in on as soon as possible so that contestants can download and practice on the 2- unranked server I am using for this contest.

I did not have any issues with the beta as it worked fine. The problem I ran in to was when I tried to remove the old map and then install the new map the server and my local machine still recognized and loaded the beta version from what I could tell or at least that is what is was calling it.

I then put back the beta files and then proceeded to install the new map again by letting it overwrite the file when prompted to I still got the beta load screen and it was still named beta.

I then tried to confirm my theory by loading beta on server and the new files on my local machine. It let me connect and play even know the version should have had a conflict since the server and my pc should have been running different versions.

Any assistance you can offer me would be appreciating d as I want to use the new version for the contest.

Please contact me as soon as you have some free time to spare. Thanks again for any help you can offer me.

      Thanks- Chronic Buzz

Re: Aerial Combat v3.1 - Troubleshooting Upgrade

        Hi Chronic,

As I suspected the server does not appear to check the client version before running the map. How it continues to run the map anyway, is beyond me. There may be a way of forcing the server to check a client version, but I don't know of it, and I doubt that DICE would have considered this issue (given that Servers check your game version in BF2 and SF which covers map versions).

What I would recommend trying is this:
Remove all Aerial_Combat files, directories etc (Beta and Final) from the LEVELS folder on your client PC and Server. Open BF2 to confirm that Aerial_Combat (either version) DOES NOT appear in your Map list. If it does appear in your list (and you can see the mini map etc), then BF2 is reading the Level information from a different directory to the one you think it is (you would need to find this directory and install the new version here). I can only see this occuring if you have more than one installation of BF2 or if you have 2 Aerial_Combat folders in your LEVELS directory (Remember that that even if the Directory name is different, eg. Aerial_Combat_Beta, BF2 still reads the map info from the ".desc" file in the INFO directory of the map).

If the map doesn't show up in BF2 after deleting the directory entirely, I can't see a reason why a fresh install of the Final version would not work. I have double checked the ZIP file that was distributed, and it appears to have the correct version number in all the right places.

You would need to perform a similar check on your server (similar process as above) to ensure that it is loading only the correct map version. We honestly hadno trouble at all converting our Squad server and clients to the new version.

        Hope this helps :)

Also, you didn't mention in your last post if you could see the Final version landmarks etc in game that I asked about in my reply post? This would be a useful clue. (Also what version of the minimaps do you see in your INFO directory for Aerial_Combat ?)

Just out of interest, is anyone else having this kind of issue (if going from Beta version to Final?)

Re: Aerial Combat v3.1 Final Released

If you have the beta version of the map installed on your computer you need to remove the beta map from C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Levels before you unzip the files for Aerial Combat V3.1 to the "Levels" folder. You can also just simply overwrite the existing folder since the new version use the same file name when you extract it.

If you have run this map on your local machine as a server or on a LAN party you may need to take the following steps to get this map to run correctly. Go to this directory C:\Documents and Settings\Tom\My Documents\Battlefield 2\ServerConfigs find the file named "maplist" open it with notepad and delete the entry for the beta version of the map. After you have done this restart your game or your local server and the correct map will show up and you can play in single or multi- player.

I also wanted to let all of you know that I will have this map on my unranked server at IP 64.34.240.101 later this evening if you’re interested in checking it out. Something else that may interest you is the Top Gun contest that I am sponsoring in conjunction with Incognito Gaming and LA Cantina Registration starts Wednesday March 8th - Wednesday March 22nd the top prize is $200.00 we will be using this map for the contest. Re: Aerial Combat v3.1 Final Released

.I wanted to post a suggestion concerning this map. In my opinion it is much improved over the beta version except for 1- item. I noticed that it is very easy to spawn rape the Chinese carrier with the mobile AA vehicle from the shore.

I had a guy on my unranked server where I host this map doing exactly that. Other than that this map is great and I am going to use it in the Top Gun contest that we are holding over at Incognito Gaming. This contest is open to the BF2 community and top prize is $200.00 If you are interested in registering please visit us at www.incognitogaming.net

Re: Aerial Combat v3.1 Final Released

                Appreciate the feedback Chronic.

I had actually considered that, and I'm assuming that it's a Chinese Player hassling the US on the Re-captured carrier. If so, that's a neccessary evil of the map. The reason that both a mobile AA and In place AA where kept at the supply dock is that many Beta players had raised concerns that it was too difficult to try and capture back the Kuan Ti after losing it to the US (even with the Mobile and in place AA at the dock).

The concern was that you could never get the chopper or boats/apc over to the carrier without being taken out by all the US aircraft. The only way to solve this was to make the Carrier harder to cap in the first place, include a parachute spawn at the supply dock (which you can get to the carrier with ), reduce the number of additional Jets the Kuan Ti gives the US, and maintain strong AA at the dock to help screen Jets that are trying to pick off your team mates in the water.

The US have an uncapable carrier and a permanent Air force in the map, so they shouldn't have any problems picking off one troublesome Mobile AA unit :) . If on the other Hand, a US troop is using the mobile Anti-Air to hassle the Chinese controlled Kuan Ti, you just send someone on the chinese team to C4 or rocket his annoying ass (Assuming you don't already have jets in the air that can take care of him).

It's all about having options, and changing tact when your enemy tries to get fresh with you . Those are my thoughts anyway.

Servers Running Aerial Combat v3.1 Final ??

                  Hi again Everyone.

If you know of any servers hosting this map (either the Beta or full version) could you please post that info here here so that others can see it (and so that I can include the list on the Aerial Combat Preview page)

Chronic_Buzz has included his Server information above for 3.1b, but I know there were quite a few servers running the Beta as well, and I hope that many of those will also host the final version.

The map is also slated to be included in at least one MOD (have given permission) and I would love to see it become part of the next TotalBf2 Map pack (much respect to TotalBf2 ), but I'm not sure how that happens.

PLEASE NOTE: If you had bookmarked the BETA preview page at http://www.agentk.net/bf2map/aerial.htm and gone back to it between the 6th March and today, you would have seen the new header, but would still have been looking at the old page (and old links to the Beta ZIP). This has been corrected as of now. This issue did not in any way affect the new page at http://www.agentk.net/bf2map/

Some interesting stats: About 3000 people downloaded the Beta (from 3 sources), and already close to 1000 people (in just 4 days) have downloaded the final version.

It's just a map, not a Mod. In case that has something to do with the way you are trying to load it. No one else has reported crashes when trying to load the final version (People trying to load SinglePlayer on the Beta were crashed out becaause there was/is no SP support). How exactly are you loading the map, and at what point does it crash?

                      AMMENDMENT TO README:
Under Unresolved Issues I listed that the Shadowmaps were not working correctly on vehicles. As it turns out this appears to be a global BF2 issue with Vehicle shadows at the highest LOD (level of detail). Not sure if it just my Vid Card, but the Vanilla BF2 maps have exactly the same issue on my PC (The shadows on vehicles from terrain only work from a distance). Point is, it's not a map problem. Interested to know if this works/deosn't work for everyone else? If it is a Global BF2 issue, it may need to be bought to DICE's attention.

I find a server and double click. It says "joining server" and after a while the game just closes. Same thing on LAN
