There is a new update today regarding the newly announced mod, <a href="http://ensuring-freedom.us/" target="_blank">Ensuring Freedom</a>. They have some news regarding the progress of their mod as well as some contests. Here's what they had to say:<blockquote>Some weeks back we announced the mod, and today we have just some small news updates and a contest going out there. We have opened a <a href="http://mods.moddb.com/6276/" target="_blank">ModDB</a> and I have created a small main page which I am still working on with Links to our forums, ModDB, and other various links. But we are also looking for someone with some time of skill to design and code a website for us. If you are interested, you can contact me below.<p>We so far have a small team of no more than 13 people. We have guys working in every department except skinning. We desperatly need someone who is able to skin everything from weapons, vehicles, and player models. Being able to create textures for maps is a plus, but not required. We are always looking for people in all departments aswell, including sound, mapping, modelling, and coding. Anyone interested in joining can email me at elvis@ensuring-freedom.us.<p>We have finished a few models including the Browning HP and RPG-7. Work is progressing slowing during the holidays but it will continue none the less. We have a few secret ideas up our sleves and plenty of basic information that we need to progress finished and will show off more as time comes.</blockquote>Be sure to head on over <a href="http://dx.ampednews.com/?page=articles&id=12337" target="_blank">here</a> to learn about two contests the team is sponsering. To learn more about the EF mod, visit their site <a href="http://ensuring-freedom.us/" target="_blank">here</a>.

Re: Ensuring Freedom Mod Update
Wow it's really sad that we've turned the introduction of a mod into a flame thread. I recommend no more followups to the pevious statements and maybe actually talk about the mod...
It's a solid idea, for sure. How do you plan to balance the gameplay since one side will have advanced weaponry and the insurgents won't ? I imagine that playing as the underdogs in a game will be more difficult and frustrating than how its actually playing out for real, expecially since the battles will have a definitive beginning and end. If you can tackle that problem, then I think you'll really grow a following to this mod.
My suggestions: Don't get too heavy with skinning weapons and vehicles, make the mod about a completely new and dynamic gameplay approach. I'd only expect the insurgent weapons to be skinned and maybe tweaked to be slightly more powerful than we're used to: C4 modded as IED, everyone has an one shot rocket launcher that packs a little extra oomph but isn't guideable, but most importantly, sometimes the weapons should malfunction. I know that sounds like a horrible idea, but considering that all the times that the weapons DO work, they'll be extremely powerful, it'd make for interesting gaming for both sides and add to the realism.
Also, remove warning icons etc and make the bombs fairly camoflaged. I can see a lot of fun with this mod. Put capture points inside buildings and maybe turn the claymores into a tripwire that can be placed in doorways. You could borrow indoor environments from Special Forces since they're more detailed.
The biggest and best part of your mod will be the maps: how real they look and how accurate they are. I think I can safely say we'd all love to storm into a realistic Iraq.
Anyway, huge task ahead of you and the best of luck.
--------------------
Edit: I don't know if you're new to modding or not, but considering that there's already two realism mods (that I know of) in development (Mercs & PRMM), it'll be easy to fall into copycat-land if the gameplay isn't uniquely dynamic. I really doubt it, but if you can show some kickass map renderings and such, maybe PRMM will team up with you, or something along those lines anyway.
If you could partner up with a currently in-dev reality mod, you could put all your attention into the maps and gameplay balancing. I really think that in order for this mod to be feasible you're going to need help like that. Again, good luck. I really hope it works out because I'm liking the idea a lot.Comment

Re: Ensuring Freedom Mod Update
Thanks for the comment and suggestions Jofaba.
We do have some guys that are pretty dedicated to mapping, and of course we have the great mapper, Compumaniac12 advising on certain aspects. Some indoor maps will be featured, like most of the battles that took place in iraq they will be quick little engagements. But bigger battles will be thrown in there. Our weapon damages, and kits have all been set up. IEDs are going to look like simple little bags, takeout containers and misc things so they all look normal.(for some fun, we will throw in a couple of rendered ones that don't actually explode...or will they??)
As for the website which UH60 commented on, I am currently working with 2 different people to get samples of their work and see who is interested in doing one. The current one is for a school project and only temporary.Comment

Re: Ensuring Freedom Mod Update
Jafaba, there are a few realism mods in develpmont, sure. But PRMM is mainly just ficitious battles, with a ficitious army (MEC).
And I am not very familiar with MERCS. But from the sound of the title, I don't think they are making a mod with the same priorities as ours. I could be wrong, but that is just what I know right now.
We are still brain storming ideas about how to balance it, but we are thinking up some good ones. Don't worry :P
That is what mappers like me are for :P .Originally posted by JafabaThe biggest and best part of your mod will be the maps: how real they look and how accurate they are. I think I can safely say we'd all love to storm into a realistic Iraq.Comment
