Future Combat Systems Mod Update

There is a new update posted today over at the Future Combat Systems mod website. They are showing off two new renders today. Here's what they had to say:
Hello everyone. This week’s FCS update we are a proud to present to you the Non-Line-of-Sight Cannon (NLOS-C) modeled by Guedoe. The NLOS-C provides unprecedented responsiveness and lethality to the future battlefield. The NLOS-C provides networked, extended-range targeting, and precision attack of point and area targets in support of the Modular Force with a suite of munitions that provides sustained fires for close support and destructive fires for tactical standoff engagement. The Unattended Ground Sensors (UGS), modeled by Guedoe, skinned by Kontrast, will provide a leave-behind, network-enabled reporting system for situational awareness and force protection in the battlefield, as well as residual protection for cleared areas of Urban Military Operations in Urban Terrain environments. They can be hand-employed by Soldiers or robotic vehicles either inside or outside buildings and structures.

Some great looking progress so far. Re: Future Combat Systems Mod Update

good models that need WAAAYY more imagination

my gripe isn't the quality - its the quantity of accessories

In the future every vehicle will have advanced tracking and positioning systems, which will require many externally mounted antennae's and sensor pods

i mean just think about the vehicle existing in real life - then pretend you get into it and start turning systems on. then imagine what needs to put on that tank in order to accomodate the systems you would expect to see

it just looks as plain as a scion

our vehicles are based on the vehicles that will be in the actual future combat system program, if you are under the false pretense that we are making a completely futuristic mod set in the year 3000 or something that you are mistaken, our mod takes place in the near future, somewhere near 2020.

Having a vehicle with wires sticking out everywhere is just ridiculous, you dont see planes , or tanks with wires and the like hanging out all over the place, because everything is inside.

Re: Future Combat Systems Mod Update

hey guys, ok stuff... i guess here's my two cents... i can see where troybob is coming from - the models do need more "visual" features, if anything to add interest to the objects. one thing tht kinda gets me is the use of polies - is tht sensor big? or small? either way those cylinders are alot of sides!!! and the tank - the panels seem like an unnecessary modelled feature - surely panels tht are extruded tht much could be normal mapped? and then those polies used elsewhere? if not even the latches holding them? tht should give you enough to go to town on tht "visual" interest i was cr@ppin on about... smoke launchers, dozer blade, exhaust fans/pipes, ariels etc etc... i dont know whatever suits your fancy...

anyhoo thts only my opinion - stik with it guys - i can understand how hard it is to develop a mod....

Looking good. I can't wait to try out this mod. I hope you guys find some uber mappers to give some better maps than vanilla BF2.

Re: Future Combat Systems Mod Update

Great idea with the advanced weaponry. I agree that asking for more stuff on the outside is a bit silly. What makes people have false pretenses about the future are beyond me. I can add a wifi card to my computer or laptop and an antenna will stick out of the back or side. But I can also get internal versions where nothing sticks out or is visible. Antennas aren't exactly cutting edge technology. My great-grandmother is very familiar with them; probably used to beat my grandparents with them =P

What I like about it (and sorry if you're reading my other posts about mods but I really think this is key), is that you hit the "uniquely dynamic" nail on the head. Networked weaponry? Brilliant! Unmanned surveillance? Brilliant! Simple, but brilliant. How do you plan on letting the field troops access it though? will it be like a live feed that you have to pull up, or maybe when you press a certain button it feeds to the minimap? I'll be hella impressed if you can pull off the coding for something like that.

And like Spetsnaz said, maps will make or break this mod. Advanced weaponry in ANY of the traditional BF2 maps will just look out of place and silly.

Also, don't listen to people who say the skins aren't realistic for a future mod. If you're going for 2020, the American War Machine will look exactly like what we currently expect it SHOULD look like. When people go for that "futuristic look", it really ruins a good idea. Cars are a great example of this. Every concept vehicle that comes out looks like something from a sci-fi movie because they're trying to cater to that fancy, instead of naturally heading towards an apperance that's mostly the end result of a series of changes. Your tank looks fine, and anyways, you can always release skin packs for people who have different ideas about which"futuristic" works for them.
