Here is some news for those of you looking for lower pings in Battlefield 2142 as well as a weekly event to play in. Take a look:

Hello TotalBF2142 Fans! A number of MyInternetServices servers are GameRail enabled...if you haven't tried GameRail yet, you can often get a much lower ping to your server.

Every Thursday Night we will battle it out on a MyIS BF2142 Server and will continue until we have five winners. We will meet every week to battle it out! Navigate to 72.232.218.126:16567 (Or use the GameRail Server Browser!).

Rules are basic:
• Arrive around 8:30 pm for Warm-Up.
• 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm CST will be event play time.
• Collect dog tags from all participating GameRail Staff (with a [GR] tag)
• You MUST USE GAMERAIL to win! (So download the client first!)
• Send a screenshot of the GameRail Master Browser listing your handle to "events@gamerail.com"
• Send a screenshot of your Dog Tags for each GameRail employee.
• $10 will be deposited into the PayPal accounts for the top 5 winners.

The theory behind GameRail is this:

With a regular internet connection, if you see a server you want to connect to, you may have to go through 15 or more "hops" to get to the server. The more hops and the further the distance, the higher your ping.

With GameRail, you are connected to your regular internet connection, but when you go to play a game with the GameRail client connected, you are routed to a local GameRail hub (For example: I'm 40 miles south of New York City, so I'd use regular internet hubs to NYC, then enter the GameRail network). From the GameRail hub, you are transfered to other hubs in the GameRail network, causing you to go through less hubs, thus reducing your ping. It's a sort of "private" internet...

I think it's free right now because I think it's still in beta, but when it's out of beta, it'll be a monthly subscription thing. If you're playing on servers with pings around 20 - 70, it's not worth it. This will help players in the US trying to play on other servers around the US that have high pings, such as players in Seatle playing on servers located in VA. It might help US players that want to play on EU servers because their hops before going overseas may be less if they are not near the east coast.

The funny thing is after posting my last post, I was looking around the GameRail page and I watched the little demo video that shows the difference in pings when I noticed something. They showed one server where the ping was in the 150's and it was reduced to 39. That server was MY clan's BF2 server! Can you imagine how surprised I was! :)

Pretty surprized, I'm sure! This sounds interesting, but I'm unconvinced. I tend to pick from those servers closest to my physical location...

Its only free for 30days then it little over a $100 for a year. Plus to even get the 30day trial you must give them a credit card. For a lower ping i don't think so. You don't even know if it will give you a lower ping until you give over your credit card number. they should give you the 30day trail with out any credit card info.. good luck with that gamerail

It seems to me that if you aren't wealthy, a pro gamer or a have a really crappy Internet connection that GameRail probably isn't worth $100 a year. They really need to work on the economics of this service and try to get sponsored service available.

Yeah, it really won't be worth it for most gamers, because most gamers already have good internet connections. I have a 19 - 30 ping on the server I normally play on, so I don't think I'll really have any need for GameRail. On other servers, I usually don't get above 70... and I don't play on non-US servers because there's really no reason to. :p
