Editorial: Left 4 Dead 2: Hey Valve, Why Not An Expansion Instead?

TGN staff writer Sela examines one of the most heated topics in the gaming world right now, Left 4 Dead 2, and discusses why it should be an expansion. Check it out:
So what’s up with Left 4 Dead 2 anyway, other than the fact that the acronym (L4D2) sounds very reminiscent of a certain famous Star Wars character? Valve decided to (rather quickly) develop a sequel to their hit co-op zombie-killing game Left 4 Dead. Ironically, the biggest news about the game isn’t the actual game, it’s how far the fans have gone to boycott the new sequel. Their complaints focus on the striking similarities between the two games and the perceived lack of change / improvement. As of this writing, the L4D2 Boycott group on Steam’s website numbers around 40,000. Continue Reading...

Do you think Valve should have taken the content from Left 4 Dead 2 and created an expansion to the first game? Or are they justified in creating a sequel already? Be sure to take some time to read up and then discuss the editorial by posting your own opinions on this subject either in this thread or in the blog.

Personally I'm still disappointed by how "beta" L4D feels, before they announced L4D2 I assumed we'd see the game progress like TF2 and become a well rounded game. Now I know that won't happen and we'd have to pay again to get the "full version"

You haven't been following this issue. Valve already stated that this content was all developed in a test build as additions to l4d. Somewhere along the line, incorporating all these changes became too drastic a project, so they scrapped the idea of adding to l4d, and decided to make a new game encompassing all these new features.

This game [L4D2] is a product of Valve South's inexperience.

In no way it is justified, those ex-Turtle Rock assholes screwed over Valve, and Valve now has to deal with all these complainers, what the hell was going thru their heads when they came up with this idea.. I mean did they honestly think "Oh ok since we won alot of awards over the past couple of years, I'm sure people will go ape shit over the sudden announcement of L4D2 or any other game we come up with."

But among all this controversy, there is SOME good news, Valve has taken another advice from the community and decided to go ahead and make the infamous "Spitter" special infected character for the game. Atleast that's SOME progress.

I don't care what they do with it, as long as it's cheap. If they try and charge me $40 for it, I'm not gonna buy it.
