Versus is the competitive mode in Valve’s Left 4 Dead, the new survival horror title coming to Xbox 360 and the PC on November 18. Versus Mode allows gamers to take control of the boss infected, in competitive “round-based†play against the Survivors.
Playable with 2 to 8 players, Versus mode will initially be playable through the game’s Blood Harvest and No Mercy campaigns. Once teams are organized, the round begins with a Survivor team and a Boss Infected team.[break="more on versus"]Scoring takes place on the Survivor side. Points being awarded for distance traveled. If players survive long enough to make it to the checkpoint, there are also health bonuses, multipliers for each surviving player and a multiplier based on the difficulty of the map. The score is cumulative across a campaign, giving teams the full round to capture the win.
As an infected, you can play as the Boomer, Hunter, Smoker and Tank. While playing as the Boss Infected, the team’s job is to play defense - coordinate attacks to break apart or stop the survivors, as you attempt to keep the Survivor score as low as possible.
Unlike traditional competitive games, the two teams’ abilities are completely different from each other. The Survivors are equipped with traditional firearms. The Boss Infected, however, only have their mutant abilities available to them. Specifically, these are:
