Free Day of Defeat Weekend this July 4th

July 4th is fast approaching and what better way to celebrate it than by playing a game based loosely on the events in WWII. Yes, Day of Defeat: Source just underwent a massive update tonight and a free weekend means that everyone can experience it together.

You can pre-load the game right now if you don't already own it. All you need to do is head on over to the DoD: Source Palermo update page and click the giant orange "PRE-LOAD NOW" button up top.

Most of the updates are fine, but one of the fundamental things I liked in Day of Defeat was the fact that it didn't play like a silly arcade game, and you had to work to figure out where snipers were pinning you down from.

A sniper ought to be a formidable adversary at range, and instantly revealing their location (along with the nemesis/domination system) takes DOD:S further away from immersion as a WWII game and more towards the comic, arcade shooting of TF2.

Who knows, maybe that's what people want, but I find it disappointing.

I think it was smart to go in that direction, I mean DOD by far wasn't the best WW2 shooter when you compare them to the call of duties for example. I personally like it more than I did before, if i want to play a cartoonish style WW2 game DOD:S is the game to goto, for realism there are just way too many WW2 games that did it better in the first place.

Day of Defeat, in any form, is extremely far from realistic. It's always been arcade-y. If you want realism in your FPS/WWII game you need to check out Red Orchestra. If you want something more modern there's always Operation Flashpoint or Armed Assault.

valve is basically dumbing down all of their games to make them more accessible to new players.. another perfect example of that is cs:source.. sad :[

They haven't touched CS: Source in ... years. What makes you say that?

Also, how is moving to the OB engine a "dumbing down" of anything?

                I'm legitimately curious.

Rofl, I just realised that they didn't touch CS:S for almost 2 years now, insane.

Why should they? I virtually haven't played it in two years either. :P

I played the original DoD quite a bit for about a year, and I'm not saying it was the pinnacle of realism, but it was a good balance of realism with fun. This seems (in my opinion) to shift the scales towards cartoonish WWII action, which for me just doesn't work.

I own Red Orchestra and Operation Flashpoint, and both of them are realistic to the point of being less fun. DoD had a good balance of realism with accessibility for my preferences, but now it's shifting too much towards the simple and silly side to be that ideal balance. We're talking personal preferences here, though, so I'm sure many others will welcome the move.
