Pyro Unlocks Revealed; Custom Maps Revealed

Apparently, some intrepid people got their hands on the early access means to the Pyro update page. Half-Life2.net makes mention here of the URL, so let's just go ahead and put it up.

The Pyro update page contains a wealth of new information today. The two new community maps that will be included in the update are cp_fastlane and ctf_turbine. The site also lists descriptions for all of the achievements and lists the details on the new weapon unlocks.

First, the old flamethrower? It's being upgraded with an alternate fire function that sends a blast of air out to deflect projectiles or to push enemies back. I'm sure those soldiers will love you when you kill them with their own rockets!

The new weapons, shown above, will be the unlockables that you can earn by hitting achievement milestones.

The Flare Gun - This weapon replaces the shotgun and sends out a ball of fire to set enemies ablaze from afar. You will have to aim carefully, however.

The Backburner - This replaces the default flamethrower in the game, and thus removes the new air blast ability. However, it grants the player 50 extra health and dishes out criticals when you attack enemies from behind.

The Axtinguisher - Criticals are guranteed when attacking someone who is engulfed in flames. If the person is not on fire already, the weapon will deal significantly less damage than normal.

The new update is still slated to be released tomorrow.

Sounds great! The secondary fire adds some needed dimension to the base Pyro.

Nice. It will be almost like the Pyro Guy in that Fortress Forever mod for Half-Life 2. I like TF2 the best. But I enjoy the many strenths of FF.

Wow. I am ok with all the upgrades, but the change to the default flame gun sounds SUPER unbalanced.

The air blast sounded like a short, quick blast, not a constant stream you can deflect any and all incoming attacks with, leading your team into the heart of the enemy encampment. The latter would be horribly unbalanced, but allowing occasional quick blasts of air makes things interesting for an otherwise underpowered class.

Given that the Pyro's strength is in close combat, I personally see the air blast pushing enemies away as a mitigating factor on the secondary function more than a benefit. What I do want to see, though, is if you can friendly-fire that air blast straight up to give Scouts a "third jump" as they hop over you.

The Flare Gun is actually what I look forward to most in those upgrades. Not that the Backburner isn't nice, but my main problem with going Pyro is the lack of any ranged attacks to use as suppression while I try to get in close. Giving Snipers something significant to dodge would be a welcome addition to the Pyro arsenal.
