If I found out the judge presiding over me had the power (but not the legal authority) to prevent me from accomplishing my legal rights, and then had the audacity to think that I'd sit down and shut up and meekly do whatever that judge told me to during a proceeding that has me taken to task for doing nothing wrong in the first place, that judge has another think coming. Arrogant is the least of the things I'd want to call that judge.
According to JT here, the judge has no legal right to preside over the proceedings in the first place, making the whole thing a sham and a farce to be nulled later, so why should he even bother? I'd walk out, too.
Now...this said, I will repeat myself in saying that there may be (and probably are) points to counter his arguments, and facts that he did not feel the need to mention that would paint a different picture. But I can at least see the picture that he did paint.
Have you no empathy, even for your enemies? I pity you.Comment

I just find it silly to adopt a "Point and laugh" stance, completely ignoring the valid points that he did bring up.
He's an idiot about some things, to be sure, but to knee-jerk point-and-laugh everything he ever does or says is what's silly, to me.
Whatever happened to an open mind being an admirable quality?Comment

Hard to believe I agree with Thortok on anything but he's absolutely right on this one. If anyone's being childish it's those of you celebrating this travesty. The gaming community -- creative, retail and journalistic -- has become a bigger bunch of whining juvenile pussies than I ever thought possible
If you've ever been to a United States "Court of Law" -- even for something as trivial as a traffic ticket -- you know that making a mockery of it is an oxymoron and a redundancy. The U.S. Justice System exists solely to strip the freedoms, rights and dignity from anyone unlucky enough to get stuck in its unholy maw.
It's hard to respect an entity that respects nothing but itself.
And just to prove the point that the status quo doesn't stand for dissent I'd like to point out the utter and obvious futility and failure of EA's Mass Effect DRM to keep the game from being successfully pirated mere days after its release, while simultaneously inconveniencing and/or preventing legitimate users from playing it.
Let's see how long Mr. Zips the Chimp lets that stand before Politically Correcting it out of existence.Comment

ya know, I've kept my two cents out because this is just a bitch fest like any other news post, but really, the whole us justice system isn't that bad.
it isn't any worse than any other court system in the world, and the laws that our officials make (and the courts have to enforce) is what can fuck people over more so than the courts themselves.
but anyways.Comment

I think the fact that we're even on CSN in the first place illustrates our support for the idea of wanting Jack Thompson to shut up. That should be an obvious and universal agreement from everyone here.
That said, the way Jack Thompson is removed from being a public nuisance is of critical importance.
I don't respect prostitutes, but I do acknowledge that some women are very good at prostitution. Likewise I seldom respect lawyers, but I realize that JT is very talented at what he does. I read his full statement, and as any good lawyer would do, rather than arguing from how he feels about the issue (as he does on TV) in the courtroom he argued from Florida law.
As stated before, while walking out of a courtroom at first glance sounds like a childish thing to do, his multi-tiered argument largely rides on the basis of established Florida laws that were violated at various points in the process that led to this hearing. The essence of JT's argument is that the whole hearing was fundamentally invalid, not because he didn't like them, but because of specific legal requirements and conditions which were not met. As such, the only way to act in a way supportive of his claims was to do exactly what he did: state his case and then boycott the hearing.
It sucks to see people use loopholes to avoid what we feel we'd like to see come to them. However, it would suck a lot more to see laws overlooked and ignored when they go against the wishes of those charged with enforcing "justice" in these cases.
If JT's claims are substantiated, he could well get off the hook this time. It is my impression that a valid case for disbarment could still take place in the future, but I think when you're talking about taking on a lawyer, you've got to have an airtight case or they WILL pick it apart using any obscure laws they can find to use.
But enough law talk. Isn't it fun to enjoy some sensationalized news every once in a while? I think we need a good "public enemy #1" like Jack Thompson to help bind us potentially violent, future murderers together.
