Resident Evil 5 is another one of those "it's not a FPS but it's going to be damn hot" titles coming out. So, we're going to offer up a little bit of love to the game here since the FPS world is a little quiet at the moment.
New previews, hands-on ones at that, are creeping up all over the Internet today. Kotaku had the first hands-on preview that I read today.
CVG chimes in by saying that RE5 will sport nearly 20 hours of gameplay. This seems to be about on par for a Resident Evil title, if not skewed to the side of being a bit longer than its predecessors.[break="impressions from 1UP"]1UP also had some hands-on time with the new survival horror title from Capcom. They took a liking to the destructible environments, locational damage system, and highly detailed art style.

Our brief time with a hands-off playable certainly kept our interest in Resident Evil 5 piqued, as Capcom seems to be wisely sticking to much of the gameplay conventions set forth in RE4. Everything looks better with a new-gen coat of paint, with cool tweaks like a more kinetic over-the-shoulder camera and smoother animation - we especially liked seeing Chris swap out the numerous guns strapped to his back and hip - keeping our eyes entertained. The Kotaku team seemed to be especially impressed with the visuals and the draw distance that lets you see for miles around a high vantage point. They do mention that the game plays and feels a lot like Resident Evil 4, not that it's a bad thing.

Along with silencing the questions of where the game takes place, the answer to the question "Why Africa?" leads to several indications that this Resident Evil will figure prominently in the overarching story of the series. Takeuchi noted that Africa is frequently referred to as "the birthplace of humanity." It also happens to be where the progenitor virus, from which all of Umbrella's research subsequently sprung, was originally found. That points to this installment potentially delving into answers as to where it all started.Resident Evil 5 is slated to arrive on the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles at some point in the future.
