Day of Defeat: Source BETA Officially Arriving

Update 2: The BETA is now available for all DoD:S owners. Look for it under your uninstalled games to join in. It may require a restart to your client before it shows up.

Update: The client will be available within an hour or two. The server BETA is available for all right now.

Original: The BETA for Day of Defeat: Source that's been mentioned here a few times today already is now about ready for public consumption!
A new update adding support for Steamworks is currently available in beta for Day of Defeat: Source, the popular World War II online action game from Valve, creators of the Half-Life and Counter-Strike games.

Leveraging the recently released free set of services available in Steamworks, the Day of Defeat update will add 51 achievements for DoD, player avatar display in the scoreboard and win panel, and detailed player statistics integrated with the Steam Community features (www.steamcommunity.com).

This update also adds support for popular features introduced in Valve's Team Fortress 2 (TF2), the PC title named multiplayer game of the year by Gamespy.com and PC Gamer. These include "nemesis/revenge" freeze cam and new effects driven by the particle system introduced to the Source engine for TF2.

In addition, this update will also introduce a new map, dod_Palermo, which is a remix of the most popular community map, dod_salerno.

Owners of Day of Defeat: Source, retail and Steam versions, may join the beta free of charge.
The BETA will appear as a separate app along side Day of Defeat: Source for everyone that owns DoD: Source.

Yes they did. Goose and Cliffe both work for Valve. Well, Cliffe still does at least. IE: They made CS.

Valve didn't "make" Portal either. They just simply polished a finished school project. :]

Those games are irrelevant, Valve did create the uber-game, join the campaign today.

Even if Valve did not make/create the mentioned games, they still recognized them as being great games and will do their best to popularize them.

I never really got the hang of DoD source and never really played it, although it looks interesting. Might give this a try.

As a long time DoDS player, im not impressed by this at all.

Why make DoD into Team Fortress WW2 ?

The freeze cam idea is a bit ridiculous and totally ruins the style of the game. If I find myself a nice little sniping/mg spot, its going to be instantly revealed as soon as I kill anyone, forcing me to spend more time finding another spot to shoot people from rather then actually shooting them. Camping is a big part of this game, but its just been made a hell of a lot harder. I *hope* theres a way to disable it server side.

And its either broken or I'm being hit from across the map through several walls by snipers :/

I dont like the idea of allies not colliding with each other either. For instance, when a team is going for a cap now, they can just pile into the same space making it harder for them to be shot, rather than them having to find and position themselves in some proper cover.

I've not played it long enough to make a proper judgement on the changed weapon spray, but it did seem a lot easier for me to kill people by just spraying my thompson blindly at them. Im not sure if this a good thing or a bad thing...

All my opinion of course, but if they wanted to update DoD:S they should've added more substance rather than more style.

Theres a medic class mod thats quite popular, why not implement that?

Maybe put some proper mortars in there?

More weapons (M3, FG42, G41, MG34, M2, etc) or even the ability to change kit load outs?

Im just really disappointed with this

No, the collision thing is only for moving persons. If you're all stationary in a spot, you will be forced apart, just as it is in TF2.

Frankly, I love it with the collision as it is in this BETA. No more cheap stacking, no more morons blocking spawn exit doors.

well i like it. been playing the game a lond time competitivly and pubber.

the freeze cam gets rid of the death cam so IMO it's easyer to camp.

agree the light need some more recoil or something as is evreyone plays it like before. but now you can hit your target.

deploying Rocket/MG is wierd and i think theres less blast radius with the rocket.

you can still Quick shoot with the rifles if you fire as fast as possible

while the sights are coming up.

                        no scoping is extremly accurate.

you can walk inside of rocks and other objects (AVA) and theres no invisable walls on the spawns ( also ava is the only one i noticed this on).

also you can crash the server by shooting a rocket in to a barrel or other object that cant break but can move. it looks like the rocket is sticking out of the object and when you aproach it server crashes.

of course also the " ice skates" effect is annoying but it seems to get worse with more players.

and last melee still does not reg woth a damn.

Valve actually made nothing. They are but a non-existent body that is a cover for a larger conspiracy going on in the gaming industry.

Come on people, get off of it. As for the DOD: Source beta, there are a few things that feel off, such as scoping while prone, as it seems as though your character is sliding slightly to the right when scoping in.

Overall though, the changes are a welcome addition. However, they still need to add more army's and maps.
