Grand Theft Auto IV Breaks Entertainment Records

Grand Theft Auto IV has officially made it into the Guinness World Records as the biggest entertainment release of all time. Yes, the biggest entertainment release of all time, not just the largest video game release.
Grand Theft Auto IV has crushed the competition by selling 3.6 million units and earning $310 million in its first day of release, earning Guinness World Records for the Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and the Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours. These records establish GTA IV as the most profitable entertainment release of all-time, far surpassing other video game, film and book releases.
To compare, here is how GTA IV stacks up against the competition.
Fastest-selling video game in 24 hours: Halo 3 at $170 million. Fastest-selling theatrical movie in 24 hours: Spider-Man 3 at $60 Million. Fastest-selling book in 24 hours: Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows at $220 million.
I don't think that's too shabby at all.

Surprising for an 18 rated game (I guess it's "Mature" in the states). Considering how much airtime, mainly on the BBC, the game got pre-release, I'm also surprised that more reports haven't been done post-release. The ubiquitous "ban this sick filth" headlines haven't been out much yet, I guess because the game has been heavily advertised in most of the tabloid press anyway!

Do you think it is too irrational and cynical to think that there MIGHT possibly be a conspiracy here? That this has been some kind of huge deliberate mis-counted statistic in order for Rock Star to get some more $

Please excuse my extreme skepticism, but I find it is important to also propose possibilities in life so man can analyze them and conclude upon them, in the philosophical search for truth.

You know, I wonder if his mother is still alive. I would consider sending HER a heartfelt letter of the illogical and irrational things Thompson is doing to the United States, just like he attempted to contact the mother of Rockstar's chief.

              All those sales...

And according to some of you, not a single one went into the hands of children under 18 without proper, informed parental consent deciding that their kids were mature enough for the game.

              Yeah, right.

I think it's kind of sickening that this 'entertainment' is what people pay money for... That's really a sad status of society.

Shut up already. Seriously, just shut up. That has nothing at all to do with this. If they end up in the hands of kids under 18, so what? The sales went to those over the age, or rather, the sales should have.

This entertainment is awesome. Right now, you're in quite the minority with your mindset.

Yeah, what a bunch of hooligans! And all that hippity-hop music and rock-and-roll is totally ruining our society as well!

I bought 10 copies just to hand out at my local elementary school.

LOL @ ALL THE COMMENTS ABOVE...but seriously. I play GTA, but I am against it in regards that it is oversaturated in pop culture. I mean theres no stop to "word of mouth" but its annoying when theres a massive GTA advertisement painted on the side of a massive building.

                            I love beating up prostitutes!

                            I love to threaten jurors!

                            I love to steal cars!

                            I love to headshot cops!

                            (Don't worry, it's only pixels...)

The two points I'm making are that one: There's no way this is not getting in the hands of kids, and even one kid is one too many. And two: even for adults, this is not good entertainment.

Do everything you do in the game, in real life, and see what happens. These are not good things to be doing, even if you're just 'pretending' to be doing them. The realization and depiction of it is too accurate.

It's one thing to play Cops & Robbers when you're kids, holding your fingers in the shape of a gun and going 'bang bang'. It's another to actually see it visually and realistically depicted on a screen that responds to your input.

Whether it's getting in the hands of children or not is besides the point, I just bring it up because with that many sales, there's no way that's not happening. The main point is that so many people are buying such a worthless game. It's sickening to realize so much of mankind has no concept of basic decency, doesn't even know it, and fights to maintain their own ignorance of the fact by stating that majority = right. You know what that's called? Mob mentality.
