    Portal Speedrun - 13:46

Who doesn't like a good, old fashioned speedrun of Portal to get their juices flowing? Transgenic passed along a video of a speedrun with a total time (from start to the finishing blow) of 13 minutes and 46 seconds.

Warning, there are spoilers contained for Portal for those that haven't played it. Spoilers? Yes, it IS the entire game that's being played here, including the credits. Warning number two, your brain will probably melt in a few places.

If you want the hi-res version, turn to Vimeo. For those looking for lower res video, then Google is there for you.[break="and for those looking for embedded goodness from vimeo..."]

Oh and I imagine you're posting from the hippest club in NYC with three car show models grinding on you?

None of have sex, that's part of the fun. Anyone know if there's a new xkcd comic...

*blink blink* I am highly confused by many of those maneuvers.

Among them is standing in the portal and changing one side of it and therefore being at the location of the new side. This is while actually standing in the portal and not on something right next to the portal. (He climbs walls this way. How?)

The other is putting a portal on the ground, then putting a portal on the ground next to it and that winding up being on the other side of the wall that you can't shoot a portal through. And therefore using those two portals to go through a wall you can't shoot a portal through and are therefore supposed to go around.

And finally (I think he only did this once), he put a portal on a wall you can, and turned around and put the other portal on the other side of that wall, except on a surface you can't put a portal on, then put the first side somewhere else. Or something.

It was so fast and half the time he wasn't facing where he was going. Many of them were pretty swift (pun intended), but a lot of it seems like glitch exploitation. Of course, that's often the case in speed runs. *sigh*

Thortok just said everything I was going to about this speedrun.. there was so much glitch exploitation, and it just was ridiculous. Insane, honestly. I just gave up on trying to follow what the guy was doing though.

I'm going to be making a full commentary video that will include slowdowns and extra clips explaining any of the tricks or glitches that I used. I figure its the least I can do, since most people watch speedruns and have completely no idea what is going on. Its especially harder to follow in this case, because its a game based on being able to teleport yourself across the level and use momentum to your advantage. I was hoping to get it done next week, but for the moment, I have a cold and I'm very busy next week with college work and such. I'll see if CSNation can be generous enough to put it up when I get it done.

Also, the first thing you explain is the fact that you can stand inbetween portals. You can only exist on one side of a portal at a time, so I'll be standing inbetween them and shoot a portal for the other side to change. While that is traveling to hit that other wall (since the portals have a certain speed, and are not instantaneous), I'll move to the other side of the portal, and the side I was just on will change. You repeat this and you'll constantly stay within portals.

The second thing is a glitch called Portal Bumping. When you try and shoot a portal on top of another portal, the game puts the new portal beside the other one. What happens when you try to put a portal beside another portal, and there is something between them (like a thin wall), it will 'bump' it to the next closest texture, which may be on the other side of that wall. This is a great glitch that allows you to get past many areas quickly, by completely skipping parts of the level.

The third glitch is a bit harder to explain. It is called the Edge Glitch. It is when a portal is close to an edge of something (like you put it on a wall, and it is close to the edge of that wall), you can touch the edge of the portal with your body or an object and it will come out the other edge of the other portal. Basically, its like the area for a portal to exist is extended beyond the swirling oval that you see. Using this, you can either completely teleport onto the other side of something (I use it to skip the door on Chamber 18, by using the top edge of one of the areas, putting the other portal on the side of something, so that when it appears, I would be standing on the top edge of it. This makes the game think you want to be on the top edge of the other portal, and it puts me there, effectively skipping the door for that level), or you can 'look around' into the other area, allowing you to shoot portals into that area (I use this one on Chamber 19 in that sideroom where it looks like I'm shooting a green box on the wall, but in actuality, I'm aiming into the room beside it, and aiming at the floor. Thats why I just sort of pop out of the floor in the side room).

Like I said, I'll make a video commentary that can show all these off, and it'll have a special credits song, but I hope that this'll help you understand it a bit better for the time being. :)

Yeah, that was the glitch I was forgetting. Shooting a portal through a portal. I was wondering how you did that, too.

Personally, I prefer glitch-free speed runs, but I don't want you to think that's a slight against you. It of course takes skill and practice to do a speed run, with or without glitches (especially since glitches aren't the normal way of playing and you've got to learn to do those as well).

It's just a matter of personal preference. But there's plenty of glitch-free tricks you used as well, that were quite impressive. Like the first time you encounter an energy ball and instead of using the platform and everything, you just make a portal over the exit and drop in the floor. Tricks like that, I think are awesome.

I like glitch runs actually, as long as it's not something ridiculou like an easteregg glitch that magically skips 20 levels.

In most HL speedruns we've got hostiles is skipped entirely by getting a scientist to open a door that he shouldn't open, fine by me!
