CS Makes the "Best PC Mods Ever" List

CVG has compiled their own list of the Best PC Mods (ever)! No, this isn't about case customization, but rather modifications for your favorite titles, both past and present.



The original Counter-Strike has made the list, along with Minerva: Metastasis (Source), They Hunger (HL1), Garry's Mod (Source), Front Line Force (HL1), and Team Fortress (HL1 - TFC). Yes, okay, Counter-Strike is retail product but let us not forget that the multiplayer FPS phenomenon began life as a Half-Life mod. It debuted in 1999 and its creators Gooseman and Cliffe sensibly chose to base their project on the engine driving Valve's stupidly popular debut FPS.



It was as though the pair had looked at the Rainbow Six series and ripped out all the tactical fiddly bits to leave us with a pure terrorist/counter-terrorist action experience. From pretty humble beginnings, Counter-Strike of course went on to be HUGE and had one of the finest multiplayer maps ever in de_dust.

I'm happy DotA made the list, but it isn't really a WC3 mod, it is just a map.

Therfore, my view of the list is filled with skepticism. But good for CS and TFC.

TFC and CS deservedly make the list, but where is the hell is Sven Coop?

DotA is almost a mod, so I think it deserves the spot.

I lol'd when I saw they hunger! That game was so cool, but I thought I was one of the few who actually played it. And mainly in multiplayer :P

de_dust finest map ever? Gag.



The map is moderately okay. de_dust2 is better (with the one exception of that stupid sniper spot through the crack in the door).



But other maps are better in every way except for popularity. That's the only category de_dust wins in. Finest map ever? Double gag.

de_survivor and cs_milita are clearly superior maps if only people weren't too lazy to learn them properly. Though to be fair they do just say 'one of the finest multiplayer maps ever'. Most of the maps in TimeSplitters shit all over it of course.



Anyway. Meh, pretty predictable. When is there ever an article anywhere about game mods that doesn't mention CS?

CS was the stepping stone to what mods and modders can do with a game engine. it was so popular it made valve buy them out.



what other mod that was as popular BEFORE CS got as high rated and bought by the company from which the engine came from?



personally de_dust was the best map when CS was a mod. i believe dust2 came out after it went retail but i could be wrong. nevertheless it was the original de_dust and 2fort that made them what they are now. i believe rocket arena 3 shouldve made the list as it was a hugely popular mod, but the map ra3map11 is so overplayed till this day that it killed the game. be lucky people still play survivor and militia once in awhile and like it. in my opinion the map; ra3map11, made ra3 and broke it. now q3, q4 are just dead dead dead. john carmack is still the man though.
