TF2's Art Director Says Game Art is in its Infancy

The Art Director on Team Fortress 2, Moby Francke, has gone and done it now. In talking to Gamaustra, Francke had this to say about the current state of video game art design and direction.
I think video games are at such infancy in terms of art style, actually developing it. We're dealing with 4000 years, really, of art and conceptual design.

For it really not to be utilised, and for the industry to basically dwell in a certain type of genre which has been around the 1980s up to present time, it's pretty much all they're embracing... Hopefully people will wake up someday.

But I think when you take high risks, sometimes the results will be much better. That's what we were lucky to achieve with Team Fortress 2.
And that's not all! No sir, Francke also commented on Grand Theft Auto 4's art style calling it, "like other games out there."

GTA4 doesn't have an art style. The box art perhaps, does.

The game is doing the same as all the other games out there, trying to be "REALISTIC". ¬__¬

It's good for games that we are seeing good games with different approaches to the art style. People won't just look at screens and think "oh this is a gimmick game".
