I used to be in a pro UT clan which had a couple of girls in it. They always used to bitch about these kind of 'events' and groups, because they do more harm than good.



Want women to be accepted into gaming? Then get on with it and fucking play the damn game. Nobody would actually give half a damn if it wasn't for groups like this going out of their way to point out "we're women, and we play video games, ain't that something!?".



Back in UT it was pretty okay, that game had a slightly higher female population than CS does, and nobody really gave a shit what gender any player was; you just got on with it. Single-gender clans like this wouldn't have been tolerated, and this kind of parading arsehattery wasn't the sort of thing anyone would stand for.



If CS, WoW, GW and Xbox Live (the current main sources of the 'women gaming is something novel' problem) could just follow suit, then we could skip over these clusterfuck events. As it is though there are far too many cases in each community of certain groups of women going to pains to point out the fact they're different in some way, and that just slows down the whole process.



Sit down, shut up, play the game. It's the only way the community will truly progress.

Bunch of attention whores, and of course I'm using that as a figure of speech, there's nothing fancy or new about female gamers, never was a big deal, but to some, and I'm talking about the lonely nerdy boys, female gamers are the next best thing to finding a rare item in a MMORPG game.



God knows how many of em stroke themselves while talking to a female gamer via voIP. The idea of female gamers being something magnificent is about as dumb as people calling video game leagues a sports league.

But still, why should we care if they're under 18 and are female?

I'm commenting kinda late on the subject, but yeah... females in gaming is still an issue, as much as we'd like to pretend everyone is the same. A lot of it stems from two basic things:

• The majority of gamers are still younger guys, and
  
  
• We live in a culture that reinforces this.

How many dads buy their boys an XBOX with Halo as opposed to how many buy their daughter the same? Don't get me wrong, there are always exceptions, but as a rule we still live in a culture that says boys want to shoot things and play sports, where as girls want to go shopping and have friends over for slumber parties.



Add to that the fact that a large vocal portion of the guys that play video games (we come across them constantly in pubs) are either adolescents with raging hormones or older guys that have no respect for women and view them as objects, rather than people, and you have a rather intimidating online population for the beginning female gamer.



Can that be overcome? Sure, some girls are impervious, some enjoy the attention, some pretend to be a male player to slip in under the radar, and others join groups they feel supported in -- such as the one in question here.



I know I've played under female gamer tags before to experience a small piece of what it's like, and you're definitely the focus of a lot of attention as a female player, especially if you do well. Dominate a server with a female nick and I can guarantee you'll be the subject of conversation, with about a three-way split between young guys hitting on you, guys doubting that you could be a female (because you're good) and insecure guys calling you all sorts of sexist slurs.



Like it or not, there are reasons groups like this exist, and honestly I think us guys are more responsible (as a gender, if not individually) for this result than we'd care to admit.

I saw a commercial for some toy that was basically a house, and the ad was all about how your little girl can pretend to cook, pretend to clean it, pretend to invite guests over, etc. Basically, barefoot and pregnant at 3 years old. The entire commercial was almost a satire of itself about brainwashing little girls as early as possible into this 'stay at home' position. Sadly, they were being serious.



I think girls who game are hot. I think guys suck.
