I got the announcer voices to work in my portal installation by deleting it and re-downloading

DL speeds were terrible today, avg about 7-9 kb/s, until about 12:45 it bumped to 270 k

so I beat portal for the second time, its much better WITH the announcer!

I'm working on the portal challenges with as few portals as possible. Some of those are damn hard, but as long as you remember that there are no easter eggs. If you see it, you need to use it. Although I'm stuck on the last level. Damn, portal might just replace FFT as my favorite game.

rizzuh, I'd like to talk to ya a little more about DigiPen sometime... what degree did you get from there?
I got a B.Sc. in Real Time Interactive Simulation, which is similar to a Computer Science degree with more graphics courses and (obviously) more game projects. DigiPen is a great way to get a job in the games industry and you'll definitely learn a lot. On the other hand, it requires an inordinate amount of time and you will learn to sacrifice your social life to pass classes and do well on your projects. The school has only a handful of women and is located in the suburbs, which mean that it's not exactly the college experience.

Why don't you e-mail me at rizzuh at google's e-mail service if you have any more questions

I'd help, but I can't visualize what level that is, can you be a little more specific or perhaps give a screenshot?

Please don't read spoiler unless you've finished Portal AND Epi2!!

You guys do realise that Alyx and Gordon are off to an Aperture Science laboratory up north? With all the references to Black Mesa running through Portal (I hope you all spotted the projector boards after Room 19!) I'm guessing that the events of Portal may play a huge part in Epi3! I can barely contain the joy at the thought of using a Portal gun in Epi3, and Gordon/Alyx investigating the Aperture Science lab

I always thought aperture science was in California, and the Borealis was in the arctic, but the Borealis was an aperture science project. When you are flung from the building at the end of portal, it sure doesn't look like the arctic.

My theory is that there's some sort of a Portal gun on board the Borealis. Something will happen that will restrict your use of the gun to just inside the ship itself. This is, of course, assuming that you get to actually use the Portal gun in Episode 3.

In other, non-Spoiler news - you see that people are using the Portal gun in Ep2 already as a quick mod? Mostly functional, for the most part.

I've just beaten Episode 2, I'm gonna play through it with comments, then do portal, and then I might check out TF2.

I have to say, hate the ending, although I might've enjoyed it more if it hadn't been spoiled for me before I even finished downloading it. Thanks a lot, #25. -.-

At least there were plenty of /other/ surprises. I like the large amounts of vistas and cutscenes. Since there weren't that many puzzle areas, especially later on in the episode, they definitely made the game last longer. Although I did basically sit down and beat it in about 3-4 hours, one sitting.

I liked how when you achieved something, or took a step towards achieving something, it notified you in the bottom right. Flip side of that is, the 'fps drop' I get from having steam community on in-game can't be removed, because steam community is permanently on for this game. Does anyone know if getting all the achievements does anything?

And I have to say, in terms of visual effects, I am in love with Motion Blur. It actually IMPROVES my FPS when turning, significantly, and it looks cooler, too. It actually makes it easier to spin on a dime, and I saw a definite improvement in my aim because of it.

When I got to the part near the end of the game where you have to guard against all those striders, I swear THE last strider was right at that spot and it was 'sucking in' to shoot the rocket when I finally killed it. Literally last second! That was more cinematic to me than the destruction of buildings...most of which I missed because I was too busy running off to get another stickybomb. -.-

If you don't want people to read something, then don't write it.

I just finished portal, and I have to say, that was the funniest game I've ever played, second only to Monkey Island games.

Sometimes the puzzles were so hard because I was too busy laughing.

If you had the serious misfortune to play without the 'announcer voice', you have GOT to go back and fix it, don't try playing without it, not worth it. =P

You spoiled it for yourself! Ya know zips put up reviews before the orange box came out, but I made myself not read anything spoiler related.

The pattern of behavior for this page is that the spoiler tags were not actually "spoiler related". You then break that behavior by giving away the ending of the game and just generically say "it's a spoiler, don't read it". You could've said "Unlike the above, this is a REAL spoiler, this is the ending to the game, so don't read it if you don't want to know." But, of course, you didn't, because then people wouldn't read it, and their game wouldn't be spoiled, and you obviously don't want that.

Also, keeping in mind that a good half of the 'fake spoilers' come from your posts, as well, so it's clear you're intentionally contributing to the 'false security' that nobody's putting real spoilers in.

You know perfectly well what you did and now you're having a glib fun time pretending you didn't do anything wrong and it's my fault for reading it.

You also don't even address the fact that not a single person in this thread, or likely to visit this thread, would at all even slightly desire the information you gave, behind a spoiler tag or not. It's not the answer to a puzzle someone is stuck on, it's not helpful in any way, and there's no way of knowing what it is before reading it.

Every single element of your action was intended to ruin the experience for others. You obviously mean to spoil the game for others, 'dropping a bomb' immediately after a series of 'fake spoilers' by yourself and other people, and pretending like you can get away scott-free just because you gave the 'necessary' warnings.

For you, it's a win-win. Either people don't read your comment, and don't get spoiled, in which case you don't get blamed, or do read it, and get spoiled, in a way you can't get blamed. The third alternative, that they beat it before reading your comment, makes your comment pointless; they already know the ending you're giving away anyway, so what's the point of giving it away? Your comment benefits nobody but your own desire to spoil the game for others.

                            Grow up.

I only saw his post as using spoiler tags. Was this not the case to begin with? If it was then... there are spoiler tags for a reason. You shouldn't have looked. Hence the "spoiler" in spoiler tags. Just saying.

It's the standard 'cry wolf', Zips.

Spoiler tags #1 and 2: Nighthawk, level of spoiler = none, spoiler tags used just for fun. Those comments slightly relate to the game Portal, but only make sense after having played anyway, so again, no "spoilage".

#3 (quoted) and #4: Someone asking for help and giving it. While this spoils a 'puzzle', it does not give away plot or storyline, so even someone who read it doesn't really get the story spoiled for them. And if they don't want spoilers, it's clear not to read those.

#5: Spoiler tag used basically to make a comment on the amount of spoiler tags.

                                #6 and 7: 6 is again a puzzle-related spoiler, 7 is a joke-spoiler.

#8 and 9: 8 is a filename, I don't really see in covering that with a spoiler as it's just gibberish anyway. 9 is something players should have within the first 30 seconds of the game, and was included in the review - shouldn't really be considered a spoiler so much as a description of the game.

#10: Unlike any of the previous spoilers, this is a complete and utter spoiler. Based on previous experiences in this thread alone, one would expect something similar to #5, but instead, it's the ending to the game, which of course you only realize AFTER having read it and gotten spoiled.

Honestly, it's very obvious to me, either he's in the wrong, or every single person who used the tag in a way that wasn't a spoiler was wrong (in which case, some of his own previous comments were wrong). If one wants to be technical, it was the repeated use of the spoiler tags for non-spoilers that was the true crime.

It's basically a 'cry wolf'. All those spoiler tags 'crying wolf' and winding up not really being spoilers gets one in the habit of reading the spoiler tags by default, as I'm sure he knew and took advantage of so he could spoil people while pretending he isn't doing anything wrong.

And that still doesn't answer the point - what's the point of even providing this information anyway, spoiler tags or not? Who benefits from it? Unlike #3, 4, and 6, this isn't asking for or giving help, at all. As I said before, either people don't read it, so there's no benefit, or they already knew, so there's no benefit, or they get spoiled by it, so there's like, the opposite of benefit. If someone really wanted to know the ending of the game, they could either flat-out ask for it (in which case people would KNOW not to read the answer), or do it somewhere else than in this thread.

So again, who does it benefit to abruptly give out the ending to the game?
