article: portal preview

The second article based off of my recent trip to Valve is finally finished. This three page look at Portal, the mind dizzying title included in the Orange Box, should hopefully shed a little more light on what Portal is all about.



Throughout this preview, I try to remain as spoiler free as possible. I know how annoying it is when games are ruined by previews or reviews, and I didn't want to do that to the CS-Nation readers.

The narration is carried throughout the game by a snide and often sarcastic computerized female voice. The design decision to include this level of narration actually came rather late into the creation of the game. It was just too quiet, and the humorous voice was added break up the silence.



Interestingly enough, the developers requisitioned the help of Old Man Murray’s Chet Faliszek and Erik Wolpaw to kick up the humor factor a few hundred notches. This is a narrative experience that you do not want to miss.

I'm already hard at work on the preview for Episode 2, so look for that to come out Monday. Until then, have some cake.

great article, but now its even harder for me to wait for the orange box.

i had no idea you played a female character :P that should be fun,

how do you even know that? are you told or are there mirrors or does she speak?

how long did it take to finish the game?

is the story behind portal related to the half-life universe?

is there no background music?

You just know within a month we're going to have the portal tech in hl2, be it via garrys mod or not.

Two more days, and as for the Portal tech in HL2, someone had already done it, I forgot the name of the mod, it was many months back, but only 2 - 4 people could play, anymore and the server would lag to death/crash.

By my count you've got a little under 14 hours to bust it out lest the preview become a review. :P Old Man Murray? If my memory serves me right, the last significant thing I remember reading on there was the SUC rating for games... that is, "seconds until crate" which amused me quite a bit... been years though, figured they were dead. I'll have to check out the site sometime.



Anyway, I'm looking forward to Porthole, went ahead and pre-ordered the Orange Box so that should give me something other than MMO's to do for a few days, anyway.
