We're looking to expand our skins section shortly, but before that we'd really like to get some new skins mirrors on-board. Basically, if you'd like to donate your bandwidth to our skins section we'll need about 10 gigabytes of space and tons and tons of bandwidth. If you can provide that in exchange for a banner image and some descriptive text please get to me at rizzuh at-sign-as-in-e-mail cs nation dot-like-period net. Additional advertising opportunities are available for our generous bandwidth savants!

Fortunately there are many generous companies willing to donate their bandwidth so the CS community can enjoy free skin downloads. We do have our own space & bandwidth which CS-Nationalists (paying members) can use, but we don't have the resources to provide bandwidth to the general public.
10GB of space?
Why not buy your own? Someone would have to be quite generous to donate that to you in share of a banner.Comment

Rizzuh doesn't want to spend his pizza money on hosting. And the issue isn't space, the issue is bandwidth. I think CSNation used 1 TB of bandwidth once.
Sorry Rizzuh, because there is a bug with IE and this site (which you helpfully suggested I ditch IE and just use firefox) I posted a single letter, then edited my post to write what I wanted (the workaround way), but you deleted my comment anyway not knowing I was going to edit it.Comment

Man, going out of your way to avoid those e-mail detection thingies, eh? What you don't realize is that the clickable 'rizzuh' in your name next to the comments you make here means your e-mail is pretty much already available to the programs that try to find e-mails to spam. (Just like mine is, but then again, I don't care.) Sorry. =(
I do think that's a lot to ask in exchange for a little. Something about the way it's phrased, maybe. "We'd like a substantial portion of this, and a huge freakin' ton of that. In return, we'll give you a banner ad (which will only show up among the banner ads we already have) and a few words, because we're too skimpy to give you anything more. Like money."
I know there'll be people willing to support the site, still, but just the way it sounded was kind of...greedy. =P
As to the 'conversation', I believe a year or so ago, there was a CSN news post that basically said Firefox was better, get it, this site looks better in Firefox, etc. In fact, I think that's why I got firefox. After trying it and liking it, I stuck with it and it's been my main browser ever since. =P

I don't think that was the only post on firefox, though. I remember the 'get firefox' logo being on this site somewhere.appended @ [time="1188895489"]
By the way, while I was looking through past threads, I noticed that user "Supersonic^" has a highly offensive image for his comment-avatar.Comment

The reason we are skimpy or don't buy our own bandwidth is because it would cost a lot of money to provide a service that has no business model. That is, letting people download skins is not a business model — and paying thousands of dollars to let users freely download skins is a bad business model.
I know there'll be people willing to support the site, still, but just the way it sounded was kind of...greedy. =P
Now, the bandwidth we do provide is given to paying members, and that is a business model. Users who want free skins rely on donated bandwidth. That donated bandwidth is predicated on advertising (that banner ad and text blurb), which is a great way to promote a business.
So, if the choice is between:
a) Spend thousands of dollars so everyone can download great CS skins at high speeds.
b) Ask generous hosts and ISPs provide free mirrors so everyone can download great skins at high speeds.
Then I will go with option b because it makes more sense for us and doesn't hurt our users in the least. As to the 'conversation', I believe a year or so ago, there was a CSN news post that basically said Firefox was better, get it, this site looks better in Firefox, etc. In fact, I think that's why I got firefox. While I do think Firefox is a great browser, I also recommend IE7, Safari, and Opera in that same post. IE6 has a rendering bug which could ruin the average CS-Nation fan's browsing experience — that's why we encouraged users to upgrade.

A virus on a logged-in member would get them all, that's for sure. But I didn't realize it was only logged-in members. That helps a bit.

I totally understand and agree. However, just from the way you presented it in your post, it still sounds like asking for a lot, giving a little. You're putting the banner ad and blurb on ONE page of your site. Sure, it'll be a page frequently visited every time their bandwidth is actually used, but it still doesn't feel like a lot. Maybe if their ads get added to the rotating ads on the main page, or an article gets done about that website and what's so cool about it, or something.
It's your site, and I'm not an advertiser, but just from reading your post aloud, it seems like any potential advertiser really isn't getting much bang for their bandwidth...While I do think Firefox is a great browser, I also recommend IE7, Safari, and Opera in that same post. There's been other times where the encouragement has been towards Firefox, although you do of course admirably attempt to support all browsers. But the recommendation has always been a lean towards Firefox. Which I don't mind, I was just playing devil's advocate to explain what I thought omgomgz meant in his post.
From personal experience, I probably wouldn't've gotten Firefox if it hadn't been for CS-N saying I should give it a try. =P And now I like it much more.Comment
