watch these tech videos and listen to john carmacks comments about the ps3 and its lack of memory. http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/926/926418/vids_1.html

also it doesnt matter how powerfull the cell chip is, if its a pain in the ass to program for its just going to make it that much more expensive to develop games on.

I think that if there isn't a computer already in the home, chances are no one will buy any electronic game period. How many households don't have any kind of computer to even surf the internet, but buy new technology like the XBbox 360 and new games?
Maybe kids growing up nowadays would have both at once or none at all - but go back some years, and it's not so common for people to have computers, yet every kid had a NES or a Sega system sitting in their house. And going back, even when people did have PCs, they were often very limited in what they could do, with many only being able to run a handful of games, and literally nothing else (not even like the likes of Notepad or paint). How many 'older' (ha!) people here had something like those before a full PC or Mac? I'm willing to bet most of the people here who are old enough to have gamed in the 80's up until the very early 90's, probably know what I'm getting at.
Not to mention the PC has free multiplayer whereas you'd have to pay for a XBox Live account.
Depends on the game. There are many PC games you have to pay to play online - christ look at WoW, 9 million players all paying a monthly fee, that costs more than XBL does.
Also, if you're assuming everyone has a TV keep in mind that the average set it a standard, low-res 640x480 unit that you wouldn't want to play games on either.

Wouldn't want to play games on? I own a large HDTV, and even I am happy to say, there's really fuck-all difference. Old standard (640) units are still fine, it's not like you're missing out on anything other than a bit of sharpness.

For PC vs console, it's got to be consoles all the way. I have found the majority of console games to be more plain fun than any PC equivalent or version, and controller > keyboard and mouse. Yes, even for shoot 'em ups. Yes, really. Seriously. No, I am not a Halo fanboy. I used to be a pro Unreal Tournament PC gamer, and yet yes, I really am saying any console controller is superior to a keyboard and mouse combination. If you can't be as good as or better with a controller as you can be with a keyboard and mouse, then you must either really plain suck, or just never touched a controller before.

Since the controller thing seems to be the main argument normally about PC/console gameplay, there you go.

Anyway. For PS3 vs 360, all you have to do is look at their two copies of Virtua Fighter 5. PS3 fans claimed it was the most beautiful game ever and that the 360 could never handle it. 360 version is made, it looks better, is updated, and has some extra features thrown in. 'Nuff said.

The PSX was a bitch to make games for too when that first came out. The concept of using CDs was bizarre to many people, and lots of developers had no idea how to work with the PSX. But a few people gave it a go, and they realised if you did put in the effort to get used to the PSX, you could make some really fantastic games, and it took off.

When people realise the same with the PS3 (which I'm sure is the case), it'll take off too. It being to hard to develop for is BS. The PS3 has a couple of good games so far, and some more in the works that look like they'll be amazing (Final Fantasy XIII, I'm looking at you). Whether it's harder currently to develop for or not is irrelevant; I can produce some fantastic results, and that should be all that counts.

Though personally I'm rather hoping the 360 will get FFXIII anyway eventually so I can save my £400 from the PS3.

If you are using a ball mouse maybe you would have a point but a optical or laser mouse by design is just plain more accurate then an analog control stick. Maybe for a twitch shooter a controller can be sufficient but if you actually have to be precise you will be much quicker with a mouse.

Controllers are a big part of gaming on the whole, I don't see why this comes into arguments (especially because you can use most console controllers on the pc). Controllers rule, joysticks rule, steering wheels rule, and the mouse & keyboard combo rules (even the wii controller rules). It just depends on how the game is designed and which controller you prefer. I have a 360 controller for my pc and I don't even have a 360 yet.
