    Shacknews Does Garry

Hello, Newman. The start of a new series from Shacknews that focuses on the mod scene kicked off today with Garry's Mod. Yes, the man responsible for the creation of the one year (two year?) ban here at CS-Nation, holder of about 60 deleted comments, and a mod responsible for the greatest POTD's that have had the fortune to grace this main page, is the subject of the interview.
Shack: So how did the Steam deal come about?

    Garry Newman:
I was emailing Erik J [Erik Johnson, project manager] from Valve about something and it came up. I turned it down because I figured no one would buy it. Then a couple of weeks later it came up again, and I said yes, because the nerd in me wanted to totally re-write it from scratch again. It was all a lot more informal than I expected these things would be.
In case you were wondering, yes, there are plenty of totally extreme Gmod pictures scattered throughout the interview. Don't delay, act now! Supplies are running out!

i can't think of a better example of the 'release quick and often' development model than garry's mod. i can only hope other half-life 2 mod devs come up with something as successful and fun as he has.

The whole 'there really isn't a point, just go nuts' style of game is surprising popular. Just take a look at the 'Sim' games, starting with the original SimCity.

Honestly, to my understanding, all he did was slap a UI on what mod-makers can already do, so that you can just mess around without having to make an entire mod to do so, since he already did.

Not that I begrudge him his fame, but I just don't think it was that much of an accomplishment, in terms of concept.

However, he took that concept, and ran with it very well, and that is an accomplishment. The mod may have started out as something slapped together, but to my understanding (as I've never used the mod myself) it's progressed far beyond that now.

My only other comment is if he was rowdy enough to get all those comments deleted, and a ban, it makes me wonder how edited that interview is? =P
