Portal at E3

It looks like at least part of the Orange Box decided to show up this year's E3. As noted by the title, Portal showed up at this year's E3 and GameSpot has a hands-on preview. The preview isn't all that in-depth, nor does it really have that much new information, but here's a blurb anyway.

Portal looks to be an interesting distraction, and from what we've been told, it'll pretty much be that. Valve says that depending on how well you adapt to portal thinking, you can get through the entire affair in three or four hours, though it's also possible to stretch that to five or six depending on your puzzle-solving skills.

Keep that in mind ladies and gents. If you're a little slow on the uptake, you'll get more bang for the buck.

I don't think Portal will be that much fun. Especially if it will last only 3-4 hours.

Even so, you still have challenge modes. You can compete with yourself to come up with clever ways of completing the puzzle as well -- even outside of challenge mode.



Timing estimated for game completion is pretty much useless nowadays. Some gamers can get through it in 2-3 hours if they wanted to. Big whoop, you rush through it. Others may take 8-9 hours to complete it, maybe more, to soak it all in, get the most out of it as they can, or they may simply not have enough time or patience to complete it in one sitting. As a rough example, I'm still playing NFS Most Wanted's career mode, nearly 2 years after it's release.

I think portal could be pretty cool, from what I saw in the previews it's looks like there are many ways you could get through certain situations (of course all of those include a portal or gravity gun), so at least there will be some replay value.



Maybe there will be some good user created maps also. I'd pay 50$ for tf2 anyways so having portal seems like a good bonus to me.

My money says V.C. Sniper gets 14-16 hours of play time minimum.



Diamond Dust really hit on my initial thought with this though. If we're allowed to mod this game and put in custom content... I expect some craaaazy maps to come out in the months following release. Only downside is that you could probably create unsolvable puzzles and send gamers into hours of frustrating madness.



Anyway, I'm off to watch more E3 videos... I love this time of year. :)

I really wish I could have seen this. My router/modem sucks so any videos on GameSpot, G4, and CNBC in particular KILLS my wireless network completely.
