  • Half-Life Screenshot Contest

Valve is holding their own Storefront Screenshot Contest for Half-Life. A lucky few winners with the best screenshots will win some mystery Valve titles to add to their Steam collections.
We are running a contest to see who can provide the best Half-Life screenshots for the Steampowered.com Storefront.

The Storefront Screenshot Contest for Half-Life begins on June 20th, 2007 and we will be accepting entries for the contest until July 6th, 2007.

All screenshots approved for the contest will be judged by the Valve staff to select the first, second, third, and fourth-place winners (we will be offering free Valve game subscriptions to our top four contestants).
The rules dictate that only one screenshot may be submitted per day, and no custom content may be used. If you don't feel like clicking on the link for the full list of rules and instructions, then keep on reading.[break="rules and instructions on how to submit your pictures"]
      Rules

    • Limit one entry e-mail per day (multiple submissions in a single day will be discarded)

    • Limit one screenshot per entry e-mail (e-mails with multiple screenshot attachments will be discarded)

    • Screenshot must not depict any custom content (use only the default maps and skins for screenshot purposes)

    • Screenshot must not contain any obscenity or profanity (for example, chat text in multi-player games)

    • Screenshot must be taken at 800x600 screen resolution (or higher)

    • Screenshot must be attached in .bmp or .jpg format (do not insert or copy the image into e-mail's body - we can only accept separate file attachments)

    • Screenshots displaying custom maps or the HD pack will not be accepted

      Instructions

    • Load up your copy of Half-Life

    • Use the "F5" key (by default) to save a screenshot of an intense battle or particularly interesting view

    • Once you have exited the game, locate your screenshot files under your Steam installation folder:

      Default: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\\half-life\valve\

    • Send an e-mail to screenshot_contest-hl@steampowered.com with your Steam account username in the subject line and your screenshot file as an attachment

    • Wait for the judging announcement to see if your entry was a winner

Note: E-mail sent to screenshot_contest-hl@steampowered.com will not receive a reply.

They really need to do one for CS too, they still have some beta shots up for 1.6 on the steam site.

Perhaps that's next. Really surprised they bothered to do this given how easy it is to take a few good shots.

          Wait, HL1 or HL2?

I just realised something, they'll be recieving more than 25,000 screenshots, but assuming there are alot of stupid people out there, half of em will send multiple screenies with multiple e-mails.

          G'luck Valve, that's a shitload to handle.

I think I'll photoshop some giant Mountain Dew ads onto the walls in my screenshot submissions and maybe put an Intel patch on G-Man because the guys at VALVe love that trash.

My money says whoever has to sift through these submissions is going to see more gay porn in the next two weeks than Elton John has seen in a lifetime. I almost have pity on them. Almost.

One quick addition: I didn't see whether it had to be vanilla Half-Life or if HL:S counted too... anybody know on that?

Pretty sure it's just vanilla Half-Life.

Disclaimer: No, I won't. And I used 'internet newb' sarcasm in the above statement.

I was looking through my archives (yes, that really is the appropriate term for the voluminous directories of saved screenshots) and got curious about just how much of my hard disk was being occupied by VALVe-related products.

Aside from multiple gigs of compressed screenshots (I batch convert the HL-era shots to .jpg format for space reasons) that are sitting on my PC, along with a few more gigs of custom weapon and player models, the Steam directory tree now consumes 42 gigs of real estate.

That also doesn't include the many DVDs full of CS videos I've accumulated over the years. A lot of this space is taken up by mods, of which I have more than a few, but there are several newer ones I have yet to install... amazing just how much content can come under one umbrella of games.

Anyway, it was all while searching for good HL screenshots, and it turns out that aside from a decent one of the test chamber... I have either lost or never took a lot of screenshots from my several plays through the HL SP experience.

Yeah... I might just have you beat.

Assuming you have a legal copy of the game that you're taking a screenshot of.. why would you need a free game subscription as a prize? So it's either Valve games you already have, or a discounted old game that's now on Steam. Sounds kind of lame. I'd rather have one of those t-shirts or the headcrab doll.

This is a Half-Life screenshot contest. I'm sure there are still plenty of people who have the HL-era games and never bothered to pick up HL2, CS:S, DOD:S or Ep1, for instance. Who knows, maybe VALVe will even throw in a free copy of the Orange Box or something.

Yes Zips, definitely have me beat. That said, I've seen screenshots of your Steam Games list, and it includes Red Orchestra and several other 3rd party titles that fall outside of the HL/HL2 + mod scene, so I decry the unfairness of the comparison. But yeah, it's definitely interesting to take a peek at just how much is in there. I'm curious what the total would be if I had never compressed and moved any of my many thousands of screenshots...

Pffft, I only have 58 games installed out of a possible 117...

Yeah, once I bought a new hard drive I went a little crazy.
