Student Arrested for Making a CS Map

Another in a series of paranoia induced freak outs, comes the news that a student attending Clements High School in Fort Bend, Texas was arrested for making a Counter-Strike map based on his school. The map was intended for use solely amongst the creator and his friends, but was discovered by concerned parents who then contacted the authorities.

As a result of this, the student has been placed in an alternative education program and is not allowed to attend his graduation with his peers. The original article contains a bit more detail, but due to high traffic the site may not work when you click to read.

A follow-up article states that they found swords in the student's room, though it is reported these were purely decorative. In addition, the school administration placed this issue at a "Level 3" meaning that "a student engages in conduct relating to a false alarm or report (including a bomb threat) or a terroristic threat involving a public school." Police officials also forced the student to delete the map and uninstall Counter-Strike from his computer.
"They arrested him," Chen said of FBISD police, "and also went to the house to search." The Lin family consented to the search, and a hammer was found in the boy's room, which he used to fix his bed, because it wasn't in good shape, Chen said. He indicated police seized the hammer as a potential weapon.

"They decided he was a terroristic threat," said one source close to the district’s investigation.
Wow, a terrorist? Are you serious? I have a screw driver in my desk drawer that I use to tighten the screws on my computer chair every so often. I also play CS. I am not a terrorist, and neither is that student. A special thanks to my fiancee, Dani, for bringing this news to my attention.

Bahah, what's the problem? First thing i made in Hammer was my house, then my College classroom. Am i going to jail? If i was in America.. most likely.

It's just the easiest thing to make, you know exactly how it looks in real life and you just want to remake it for a game.

The student wasn't arrested or charged with any crimes, but police were called in to search his home, where they found five swords. Police also ordered the student to erase the game and maps from his computer.

Plus, let's not forget that he used "Hammer" to build the map, wink wink.

Police have no authority to force him to remove CS from his computer. Or the map.

Also, his own parents turned him in? What great parents.

I'd hate to be this kid. Life probably sucks for him right now.

GG to parents and auth having their heads up there ass once again... I know the feeling on this, I got kicked out of my school for similar bullshit... Its a game, and if you want to make a map based on a school its free will and the right of the constitution of freedom. I hope this kid doesn't get screwed in life because some school and people are just plain paranoids freaks...

Honestly what has America and the rest of the world come to?

I guess because I got airsoft guns, makes me a terrorist then and a bunch of knives, hammers, and screw drivers and other crap??? Thats fucking sad that police can think that low... Honestly that total garbage and I hope him and his parents sue the living crap out of that police department any other auth ties to the investigation.

They forced him to delete the map? That’s just wrong.

I started to make a map based on my high school with a few of my friends 4 years ago, we even walked around taking pictures for the textures.. I had the texture pack done and finished the skybox... we knew it would be risky.. but we stopped because we were working on other maps and got lazy

That's not the point.. people get in car crashes.. does that ruin it for the rest of us??? (I realize how extreme that is but you can't say that there aren't similarities)

I'll get flamed, but sorry I agree with the outrage. Even if you weren't going to use it for "strategic" purposes, someone else could. If you drew it up to scale well enough, then it's a really legitimate way to plan an attack at a school. If it's not legitimate? Some kid would be stupid enough to try it thinking it'd work anyway.

Why the hell would Terrorists take over a school anyway, Gosh.
