    Valve Allegedly Hacked

According to at least one website, it seems as though Valve may have been the victim of a hack attempt. This hacking, if this is indeed all true, came away with information regarding Valve's financial records, Cyber Cafe account information, the multi-core tech demos, and the real kicker, customer's credit card information.

I've been unable to get a reply back about this from Valve to verify the validity of any of this, and I honestly doubt most website will hear back about this sort of matter. So, for the time being, take this news with a grain of salt. The originating link of the site this news comes from will not be linked here for several reasons. However, I learned of this through a submission on Digg if you want to take a look around there. If you feel the need to comment on this, I ask that you do not link to the site in any of your comments.

Apparently this is the appropriate response to dissatisfaction with Valve's customer support or recent ad development for 1.6. Sad that members of a community which tracked down the hacker who stole the HL2 source code would use the same tactics to get attention.

I haven't bought anything on there since before Sin Episode 1 came out, so if they did still have my credit card information it would have been a major infringement of the data protection act.

Well, I'm screwed. Better keep track of the ol' CC transactions.

Wouldn't you think Valve would keep this kind of stuff on a computer not connected to their network (or the internet in general)? Especially after HL2 was stolen from right under them. I should sue for negligence.

                Gapen.

I purchased DOD: S the day it came out with my dad's CC number. Am I at risk? I mean, this isn't the first time my dad's credit card got stolen and used.

Nah, just monitor the CC and make sure its not getting random charges, and just tell your bank\CC to watch it for you also, they kinda have to by law and you can always set something up with them or request a new card if you feel that unsafe.

Yeah they should keep it off the computer, but then how they going to put the new info on there, its more a pain to burn and place onto an offline computer than an online and security down. Basicly who ever "stole"\"hacked" them is a total @$$wipe with no life and just doing that to make everyone freak out and make valve do something, but really they won't. Remember also that when you buy something all your info is encrypted across the transaction, thus its a lot harder to become of any use.

I'm an MIS\IT Manager and I do security lock down for large networks, like Valves CC place, this shouldn't worry you too much about stuff, if something does go wrong contact your CC company or Bank and they'll take the action on your behalf.

if valve knows their cc info has been compromised shouldn't they notify you? Or do they have no responsibility? Of course this is prob just a bunch of malarkey.

There's good reason to believe this is all true. Topics are being removed from the Steam forums that deal with this. If there were no issue, there wouldn't be a need to have them removed. This was the common trend when I was still a mod there, I've no reason to believe their policy has changed since then.

Yes, they are obligated to inform persons if their CC information has been stolen, but it seems as though they're trying to keep things under wraps right now. Because while they have not come out and said that "yes, this happened" they also have not come out to deny it either. You know, if this is all indeed true.

That's funny because I'm an MIS major right now. Not to completely stray off topic, but how do you like it?

If I was a mod, I would have deleted it regardless of knowing if it was true or not. No sense in getting people worried over something that hasn't been confirmed.

I doubt Valve will ever publicly confirm this. If they do, it'll be a while in the future. Based on what I've been reading just about everywhere, it's safe to say most of what has been said to have been stolen has actually been stolen.

saying because they are deleting threads is hardly proof. If i go there and create a hackers stole everyones steam logins thread that would also be deleted.

Trust me, I'm not basing my statement just on the fact threads are being deleted at SUF. :)
