HLDS BETA - Source Lag Fix

Apparently, Valve is aware there is an issue with Source games and lag. For this reason, they are currently running a BETA that all Source server administrators can participate in.
We have a beta update for the Source Engine available for Dedicated

servers. To get the update run the hldsupdatetool with "-beta srcds0407"

    on the command line.

This update addresses some lag issues that have been seen when running

the Source Engine (in particular, it programmatically does something

similar to using the net_queuesplits cvar).
The more server admins that participate in this, the quicker the bugs will be found (and hopefully fixed). Hop to it!

Okay, is this some new recent bout of lag that's cropped up, or is this something that's always been going on that they're just now getting around to fixing?

They make it sound like the former when it's probably more like the latter.

Either way, I wish we had a CS:S team that did half the work the Steam/Source team does.

While this may not be directly related to CS:S, it may have knock on effects (less latency equals more accurate kills). These 'issues' must be pretty minor however and won't have a gamebreaking effect.

It's recent, if the topics at the Steampowered Forums are anything to go by.

Well, at least the 'Source team' is keeping on top of things.

It's been argued before that Valve has enough people to work on generic Source updates and work on Counterstrike updates, and I agreed at the time, but now I don't think so anymore. I don't think there even is a Counterstrike team, because they're too busy doing updates to the Source engine itself, or working on other projects like TF2.

Well, if they split up their team to work on all Source related projects it'd be broken up like this:

                  CS: Source

                  DoD: Source

                  TF2

                  Episode 2

                  Portal

                  Source engine (generic)

                  etc.

Stretching things rather thin I'd say.

What I mean is, when it was brought up before that CS has seen a significant lack of updates, especially since DWP (with the sole exception of a slight increase to pistol damage), and pretty much zip on CS-exclusive features whatsoever, especially bug fixes... It was brought up, every time Steam or Source got updates, along the lines of 'okay and where are our CS updates?'

The answer at the time was that they can work on the Source/Steam updates AND work on CS updates too... But I don't buy that anymore. Either they no longer care and will never release updates to it again, or it's just really low on priority with all their other projects and stuff.

Either way, it means 'screwed' for CS.

Ummm, the lag issues have ALWAYS been here, why do you think cs:s for competitive gaming has always been a bit of a joke to the 1.6 community? (besides the nerfed gameplay)

most people have never noticed the lag issues, because most people aren't good.

He's making it like everyone experiences lag, and that this mass lag fest is ignored because people aren't "good." That's a load of BS and only holds true for a handful of people who actually experience this apparent long standing lag he's mentioning.

So you're saying that hardly anyone experiences long-term lag?

I will go ahead and tell you I have my rates set properly, so you can't attack my rate settings. I play with minimal network activity. (So no downloads, not on my computer, not on the others, but maybe the occasional surfing on one other.)

The lag is pretty obvious, in my opinion. For example, popping out into the open to fire a few shots on an enemy, and returning to cover, it'll look like I'm safe behind cover, when in 'reality' my hitboxes are still standing in the open, killing me, and spawning me back to where the guy killed me. This all happens within a second. On a 100-tick server, and around 50 ping.

Pretty bare-bones example there, but its the general idea. The hitboxes especially are pretty messed up. You can fire after you see someone, and still hit their hitbox before their model slips back to cover.

I'm pretty sure this is the same lag they're trying to fix. If I'm completely off-topic, please tell me wtf this is about, other than what I've just said.
