This is what it comes down to. They are still 100,000+ people playing CS 1.6, and no matter what valve does (barring changing the game completely) it will stay this way.

If everyone keeps on conceding, there will be no change.
    You forgot poland.

(and by poland I mean Europe )

THEY Are ALSO in custom maps guys, everytime you die and even fucking PRESS TAB you see them in corner on screen in big bright colors....damn money squelching bitches NOT EVEN A CHANGELOG FUK VALVE
Well obviously. They'll be on the tab/spec mode of every map on every server. But as far as I can fathom, they'll never been on the WALLS of custom maps.

          so...

why didn't anyone save the versions of the maps that were pre-ads from the GCF, rename them to de_dust_noads etc., and run servers with http autodownload enabled?

or are people doing that already?

The maps weren't actually modified, the ads just get put in the maps automatically by map name. If you rename your dust2 to de_dust2_noads for example, the ads don't appear.

So, it turns out that if you rename a custom version of d2 (de_dust2_1337, for instance) to de_dust2 then the ads appear in that as well. I tried it with a few random custom maps also, but couldn't find any ads in them anywhere. So I'm not sure if it just puts ads at specific coordinates on the map or what, but it clearly inserts them by detecting the map name.

The iga_static.wad, iga.dat, and iga folder in the cstrike folder most likely have to do with it.

So the game pretty much has these low budget textures in these deserted areas (Which isn't a bad thing), with banner 'ads' for gamehelper.com which blend in fairly well as a wartorn dusty banner.

Then came along high-er-resolution crisp, clean city textures placed in the same scenarios as stated above. Seeing an ad for HL2Ep2 brings you back to reality, going "Oh yeah, are they EVAR going to release that?"

I thought VALVe was going for the realistic settings, like when they talked about how the 3D skybox allowed for players to become immersed in a more realistic setting, rather than feeling like they were in an isolated box in the middle of cyberspace. Well, ads if improperly placed take away from that. Most people play a game to get away from the hustle and bustle, amirite? Ads bring that aspect of mass-marketing, making the game less enjoyable.

And on top of that, it gives those anti-videogame zealots more ammunition when it comes to cases against trying to ban these sort of games.

Valve has sold out. F*ck em....

Wow, been a while since I've seen this level of censorship for things that don't violate any of our stated rules here on CSN. For a reminder of these rules either click that link or for your convenience, I've copied the relevant section below:
                      do not
                      • mention being the "first post." Or the "second post." it's an automatic ban.

                      • demand credit for a news item that you submitted. you probably weren't the only one, ace.

                      • post porn links without a clear warning.

                      • post anything hinting at or encouraging warez. use common sense here.

                      • post off-topic. no one cares about your broken ankle when we're talking about the cs for the xbox.

                      • mindlessly flame someone for no reason.

                      • troll esports, xbox, or other cs-related items. you're not here to define which type of community is the best.

                      • advertise an irrelevant service or site. go here.

                      • leech bandwidth by using third-party images.
If we're going to ban posting links to relevant and helpful programs that block unwanted in-game advertisements, advertisements which were not present in the game when any of us purchased it and accepted its license agreement, perhaps the rules page needs to be updated.

Otherwise, speaking as a former comments moderator here on CSN, there's no excuse for deleting things simply because you feel like it. This isn't me calling anyone in particular out, it's simply requesting that what appears to be a policy of harsh censorship get reconsidered. After all, we're not here to be VALVe's undyingly faithful supporters -- we're here to provide fans of CS with news, information and resources to bind the community together and make their CS experience better.

                      Which purpose is censorship serving?

I hope that the ad revenue is worth the complete destruction of Valve's integrity... because in case Valve doesn't know anything about business, simply keeping up a good community image is worth far more than they could imagine. Giving that up was a huge mistake.

They used to be completely different from all the other EA's, but now they've become one, and as such they don't have that same competitive edge as before.

Nighthawk : Until it's either verified or acknowledged that what people are linking to is not considered illegal, I am not going to allow those links to be posted here, same as how we do not allow cheats or warez links to be posted here.

So far a handful of these so called "solutions" for no ads do involve modifying or using outdated dll's or files which tend not to be allowed in legit situations. Once I get some sort of confirmation, or I can test it out myself at some point, the sort of no-ads discussions can go on. I'm not taking chances right now.

Also, keep in mind that not all deleted comments dealt with how to remove the ads. Some were just outright vulgar filth that didn't need to be kept public.

Nighthawk, while 99% of the time I agree with you, in this case ad-prevention programs are considered third-party programs, cheats, hacks, or according to the official term in the rules you quoted, 'warez'.

I think the rules are badly termed and should include "warez, cheats, hacks, illegal alterations, illegal third-party programs, and things of this nature."

I want the ads gone as much as the next person but you'll lose any credit Valve gives this site if you allow links to what Valve considers hacks to be posted here.

CSN has ALWAYS been like that. I remember back in the day where a mod would come in every 7 months and just randomly delete 20 comments.

As far as illegality... Valve defines it in the EULA as:
Valve may terminate your Account or a particular Subscription for any conduct or activity that Valve believes is illegal.
So it honestly doesn't matter whether you believe it's legal or not, it's up to what Valve thinks is illegal or not.
