Steam News Update - February 9th

Oh my, Team Fortress 2 news. Though sadly, it's really nothing more than "Hey look! We're playing this and you aren't!" Why do you tease me so?
Team Fortress 2 is really moving along in development. In fact, things have reached a point where people start getting pretty antsy around the office as we get closer and closer to the 6:00 p.m. playtest session. We will be sharing more information about TF2 over the next couple of months, and we'll make sure to point that out to people here. We've included an illustration of some of the TF2 characters here that is currently being used for the start-up screen for the game.

Quick, someone guess what my new desktop is!

I would pay $100 to get TF2 within the next month.

Is it possible that they'll release TF2 early for those who pre-order episode 2 on steam? Or are they trying to release them at the same time to boost sales (then again, it would entice people to order over steam which is a plus for Valve)?

The whole reason I bought episode 1 was because I heard at the time that there was going to be a discount for the episode 2 + TF2 package, and I think that's a huge reason why other people are buying episode 2.

And like I said, if they release this next year with like 2 maps I'll be pissed. Also yeah, the "Hey we're playing TF2" isn't exactly something you want to tell your fans when you just delayed the game for a year.

Actually I'd happily pay a subscription for TF2 and some potent CS:S updates. D'ya hear me Valve? We have monies for you!

        ps.

Maybe they are teasing us with possibility of TF2 beta like they did with CS:S.

They didnt actually say that. The person who posted the story on here was sayin that releasing these things is like someone saying that.

Anywho, this better be somewhat "bug free" when it comes out if it took this long.

they should do what they did with dod:s and release pretty much a beta with one map and the promise of more content to come. I'd sell a gallon of blood to be able to play this early.

                    Read the post from Valve:

Sounds like they're playing it to me ..

In fact there's probably a 7:00 p.m. playtest session, then 7:30 p.m., 9:00 p.m., 12:00 a.m., then they go home, and in the morning they all rush to work for the 6:00 a.m. playtest session!

I highly doubt TF2 is "far from done" or even in "play testing". The game has been in developement since HL1 came out, DISREGARD the engine scrapes. They have had close to 2-3 years to RE-DO the CORE game (rules, balance, gameplay) even after the scrape.

So it becomes apparent that either

                      A) Valve TRULY is slow at making anything

                      B) they are just waiting for the console versions to catch up to par before they are allowed/wanting to release the PC versions

Think about it. The source engine was created long ago, HL2 came OUT almost 2 years ago. TF2 has been in the pipe , if not active since HL2/Source was concieved of. Apply various shaders and you have the TF2 look, the entire game is already made from TFC. Some additions or small overhauls and its TF:Source. Add something that couldn't possibly take more than a year or two (judging by trailers and its smiliarity to TFC) and its TF2. I feel cheated. A late fall release? It's only feburary...thats..7 months..What the ...

This might be a longshot, but I think the reason Valve delayed Episode 2 and TF2 was because they want to incorporate Directx 10 into the games. Unless I'm mistaken, they'd be one of the first to do so.

The art direction and style of TF2 is just awesome.

                            I'll stop "meh"ing when I see it.

                            Then again, maybe I won't.

My own bitter, twisted sense of reasoning suggests that it was probably related to a 360/PS3 version release. Now that consoles and PC's are finally on a level playing field in terms of development, we will see a lot more of "ok, we've done this version 100% and that one 30%....let's hold the 100% version for 9 months while we finish the 30% version, then release them at the same time so we make megabuck$..."
