Big Steam Client Update Coming

We here at CS-Nation just love our press releases. And what better way to show off this love than to give the latest press release from Valve. What might this one have in store for you? It centers around the announcement of an upcoming update to the Steam client. Read on!

Background Client Updates

Since the Steam client was first released, it has always kept itself up to date — but now it'll do so without making you wait during startup. Instead, it will acquire new updates in the background and then (once they're downloaded) ask if you'd like to restart and apply them. Steam will also let you know what's new whenever a new update is ready to apply.

I'm going to miss adding the line "restart your Steam client in order to grab this update." Woe is me. This is just one of the handful of changes in store for you next week. Other updates include a mention of five different color themes for Steam, a new look, a new "Favorites" feature, and the official release of the guest pass system. Speaking of which, if anybody is interested in obtaining my last guest pass for DoD: Source, post in the comment section and I'll shoot out an invite to the email you use on the site here.

The background downloader is designed to minimize the amount of time users spend during the patching process. As users play the game the background downloader is automatically launched at a random interval when there is new data available. An icon appears in the system tray or dock to notify players that the download has started. Data is then streamed at a very slow rate into a new folder that is created in the World of Warcraft installation directory. When a patch is released users already have most of new data available and need only to download a very small amount to be able to run the patch.

I just hope for a less laggy interface, with vista aero glass support. That'd look nice.

hey give me ya last dod source pass!!! i havent played it yet! cheers, steam updates sound good atleast it wont take 2 hours to update on startup when u delete your blob file! phew!

Their Steam team really isn't as large as you'd like to believe. It's rather small currently IIRC.

All I ask is for Steam to not be such a resource hog and to have a less laggy interface.



But probably neither of those will be adressed..

Now I think about it, I could probably send out my DoD:S guest passes to anyone who wants them. I don't play the game myself, but I do 'own' it since I got the HL2 pack.
