The biggest thing I dont like about this is the inclusion of Ads in a game I already paid for. I wldnt like it on new games but at least I'd know about it bfore I decided to buy.

Where is the benefit to the gamer getn screwed by this? Are the games gonna be cheaper cuz they bankin more money or are they just gonna get richer off a game I paid for years ago.

It wld also be ok if this is done in moderation but I remember when I first got cable and there where alot fewer Ads then than there are now. I'm mostly afraid this is going to get crazy as time goes on and we'll find ourselves looking at maps packed with Ads. I just hope that doesnt happen.

Valve area just pissed that they can't make anything more popular than something they didn't even create, IMO.

I would have to agree with a few of the comments in here. The thing that bugs me. Is say I pay to rent a server, and it gets a good community of people, thats cool my money is well spent in my eyes. But now, valve fills MY server full of adds, THEY make money off of. So what, im paying to fill valves pockets?

        F-that!

Solution is easy, imho. Extract the base CS 1.6 maps from the gcf's now, before the update, rename them to de_dust_noads (for example, and just run them. Enable HTTP download for maximum w00tness.

You thanks... You know having advertising is not what i paid for... I am pretty sure that there is a class action in this somewhere. We paid for software that had no adds, and they will make us update to software that has to have adds to run. There will be no way to lock CS:S at a version that is pre adds. Ok so you in theory could if you set your source to never update that title, but if you ever messed up you would not be able to go back.

GG valve... I have supported almost everything thing you have done in teh past, this is just plain lame, and abusing your player base.

Yet when it comes to investing money into sponsored tournaments im sure these advertising companies don't care.

                  Fuck you advertising companies.

                  And fuck you Valve.

                  Sellouts.....

Have the advertisements gone live yet? I don't play CS1.6 anymore but I plan to boot it up just to check out how the ads look.

There's a fundamental problem of the whole "class-action" scenario being tossed around. Because your purchase only covers the physical items you buy, and the software itself is only yours to use within the terms of the "we can do whatever we want and you have to accept it or quit playing" license agreement, such legal action is doomed to failure.

Until there is legislation that changes the fundamental nature of the relationship between software developers and their users, and ethical boundaries are put in place... here in the USA the fact of the matter for now is that we the users have absolutely no power over a software company. The only power of the consumer is boycotting and bad press, neither of which will happen successfully with a title that posesses Counter-Strike's enduring appeal.

VALVe may be a greedy company, but they aren't stupid. I can almost guarantee that advertisements will not be that easy to bypass.

It's not like you can't get hacked versions of CS1.6 or CS:S that run without steam and perform fine in LAN environments. The problem is that we shouldn't be sitting here questioning whether we're going to download hacked versions of games we all own just so we can get an ad-free experience some of the time.

I fully expect the server mod community to get on the task of creating a server-side bypass (or perhaps cover-up?) for these ads, however. The only interesting aspect of all this will be if they're able to do it (and still have their server show up on the Steam listing), and what VALVe's response will be.

Modifying the maps or having a server mod might be able to hide some of the ads, but don't forget that original article said there would be ads on the scoreboard and spectator views as well. I'm sure getting rid of those would be more difficult and client-side.

Even if in the license agreement it says they can change the game however they want and if the consumer doesn't like it they can just stop playing, the principle of it is still bullshit.

A cover up mod would be nice. Since advertising in games is a giant, and yet so subtle, "fuck you" to the consumer, covering them up would be a big "fuck you" right back at the people who put 'em in. Haha, love it. Can't wait.
