CS Ads Are a Go - Deal Signed

Update: Gameindustry.biz has a few additional details. Included is a better look at just what those five billion player minutes actually mean to Valve and pointing out that a deal has been officially signed for the inclusion of in-game advertisements for CS 1.6.

A German website, Golem.de, has the latest information regarding the addition of advertisements into the CS1.6 world. Granted, unless you are able to read German, you won't have any idea what that is all about. For a fairly accurate translation by ripieces, look no further than a post on the Steampowered forums.
Nevertheless the advertisements will be present enough. If it will always be built in as decent as can be seen on the Counter-Strike screenshot is being to discovered still. Also the cups and leagues - which especially have high price money for Counter-Strike 1.6 - are covered live on screen, in TV and over [the] internet. According to Valve the players can not dodge around the advertisements [...].

[...] IGA also tells that - independent from Counter-Strike - advertisements can be included into [other] games. This would reach from reproductions of real advertising posters with pictures or videos to complete 3D-Objects.
With there being over five billion player minutes a month dished out on 1.6, you can be sure there are a number of companies positively "chomping at the bit" to get their ads into the game. Oh, and that screenshot that was mentioned in the translation?

I'm not exactly sure if this picture is officially from Valve (or IGA) or if it is a possible mock-up.

If that is official, I must admit it does seem to fit in better than expected...

Ah well as long as I don't get pop up advertisements im good. I'm used to seeing ads in games that I no longer bother.

I'm sure someone is going to find a way around this.

          Someone always does.

Time to change the picture of the day.

Now onto the adverts... Well I just hope they stay as apart of maps and not huge popups through your game, if that happened that would be a travesty.

Hmm, so if they are advert/sprites stuck to maps, does that mean the bsp files are going to be updated, or is there some technology out there, server side etc that just sticks sprites to certain objects in a map.

If the advertss are just like this, then I wouldn't be too bothered, but still the community are disapointed.

Your right, someone will find away around this.

but do you want to know the best part about steam?

Valve will detect that as "hacking" and guess what. You have been banned for "hacking"

thats stupid right, why would they ban you for that? well think about it, if you "hack" the ads, valve really doesn't need you since your not really helping them. so they get rid of your rights to play.

I'm thinking that someone would come up with more of a server-side option, actually.

It wouldn't be up to a single user ID that gets rid of adverts so no banning throuh VAC can really take place, it would probably be a way of just removing the adverts altogether through the games files, or some kind of hidden config, no cheat detection would take place.

I kind of expected the ads to be kind of like that. Overall, it shouldn't ruin the fun of CS.

What a crock this is. Is nothing sacred anymore? Am I the only one who has a problem with bringing corporate interest into our games? Wake up people, in-game advertisements exist because big-industry executives need to make their Lexus payments. And before anybody says "BUT PISTAHCIO! IT'S JUST A SUNGLASSES AD? WHATS THE HARM??! LOLZZ!!!11" Shut-up. Its not just the ad, it's the principle of it.

Call me crazy, but when I play game, I do it to go places and do things I can't do in the real world. Its fun ya know? I don't need to see a Pepsi billboard or a Dell banner in my games, it takes you out of the game. It reminds me of how the developers sold-out.

I know, here it comes: "BUT THE DEVELOPERS NEED TO MAKE MONEY TOO ROFLMAO!!!"

No shit? Of course they do. But why not make money by developing good solid games that people want to play? That people want to go out and buy? It subtly says something about the quality of the game if you have to sell-out to advertisers. If you made such a good game that you're sure everyone will enjoy, then what do you need more money for? Did you put out a half-assed game? Let's say the game is good. Is the expense of ruining a good game with greedy corporate interest worth the extra money?

The world wide web might has long-gone been one big mall where every site tries to sell you something any chance they get, but I'll be damned if thats going to happen to my games.

I, for one, welcome our new corporate overlords. Seriously, I'm just fine with that, unless it slows the game down and it gets worse.

If there are ads in real life, why wouldn't there be ads in a simulation? If anything playing cpl maps takes you "out of the game" because they don't seem "real".

Well here's the thing Skippy, by PAYING money for HL2 or w/e, we legally paid for our rights to play. We've already done our part by paying for the game.
