Steam May Be Experiencing Problems

If you are un-able to log into Steam, it may be because of a spot of wind that hit the Washington state area (where Valve is located). Keep in mind that Valve doesn't control the weather, nor the power grid, nor can they make repairs to electric poles that have been snapped in half.



You can always try offline mode. I find it best to disconnect your network cable from your computer (or disable your network via the control panel) before starting up Steam. This method has never failed me for working with offline mode in Steam.

You would think they would be smart enough to have backup servers in datacenters in differernt cities, oh wait it's Valve that would make to much sence.

Spending money for a backup server in the event of a natural event can't be planned on.



It wouldn't be economical to pay thousands of extra dollars in support and bandwidth to have a backup for a short-term, random, power-outage.

For such a huge network, backups are a must, especially considering the amount of clientele involved here.



Although Steam has been up 99.9% of the time, this type of isolated event (in one state) should not affect the connectivity of the entire of North America and, unless there are indeed fragmented networks for various countries, the rest of the world.

Can't be planned on? Your right, it should be expected to happen! That's why they call it backup, for events of unexpected occurrences... You know like fire,water, and I guess we can add wind now. I used to work at AT&T datacenter, it would not cost them that much just to have an authentication server running there. Also how about all the bannwith mirrors they have running all around world, why not add a few extra authentication servers there. Pretty bad planning have one point of failure for one of the most important parts of the steam program... THE LOGIN!
