Dec 9th Weekly News - Beefed up Pistols for CSS

I hear there are going to be some changes made to CS1.6. I wonder what that whole deal is all about. This is actually the second news update this week from Valve. The first was all about their WWII game specials they have going on. You don't need that one, no really, you don't. All of the information about those specials can be found at the end of the weekly update below. More importantly is a little tidbit about an increase in strength of some of the pistols in CS: Source. There was a brief mention about this at the end of our interview with Doug Lombardi.
It's been six weeks now since the community's purchase habits began driving the pricing of weapons in Counter-Strike: Source. As many of you have probably noticed, the price of the Desert Eagle has been increasing steadily and is now somewhat out of control. This is happening because the Desert Eagle is considerably more useful than the rest of the pistols — purchasing one of the others is not a smart buy. We'll address this by making the Five Seven, P228, and Dual Elites more effective. The prices of all pistols have been reset to their previous defaults in preparation for this change.

Garry's Mod 10 continues to be a runaway hit, and we hope everyone is having fun building stuff with it. Garry has been releasing updates at a blistering pace, something that long-time fans of the game have gotten used to over the previous nine versions.

We're also running a few new promotions and have some new packages available on Steam this week. First, you can play Red Orchestra for free over the weekend and, during WII week, purchase it at a 10% discount off its new price. Second, all of the Call of Duty games have been rolled into a single War Chest package, which also carries a 10% discount during this promotion. Finally, you may purchase Day of Defeat: Source for a 20% discount through December 14th.
Let's recap. The addition of DWP results in the signaling that the Desert Eagle will be bought no matter what its price is due to the other pistols being nothing more than peashooters in comparison. This then spurs a resetting of the DWP to compensate for the $23,000+ projected price the Desert Eagle was set to have this week, and finally results in a few of the other pistols getting a much needed boost in effectiveness. Got that? Good!

And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for the p228 compact, had become a useful pistol.

If they're going to do this with pistols, it only makes sense that they should do this with rifles and smg's too.

My God I think there has been a breakthrough at VALVe HQ.

UMP is more effective than most people think, as is the MAC and TMP, I feel sorry for any 1 AWP against any 2 UMPs, you have 2 or more umps in a group they'll annhialate you. It's so underrated, but it's a freaking headshot machine.

Anyway, at least something good DID come out of DWP, they're using the data effectively.

I can't help but wonder if the servers that have dynamic pricing turned off are factored into the equation because honestly that could severely f* up some of those stats.

but why didn't they fix the guns before launching dwp? They should have collected data silently fist, fix what people hated before, and introduce dwp when almost everything is useful in some way.

Fixing the bad guns is really a good idea, I hope this comes to 1.6 too. After taking their ads, we deserve this at least

I thought that at first, but now we're seeing the M4 and AK prices even out, (the usage stats have definitely gone down) if it was happening they've fixed it. The deagle/pistols problem was the last thing that needed ironing out (unless you disagree with the cost of a helmet).

As a fan of the p228 and 5-7 I for one am looking forward to their new Beefed versions. The elites could be a very interesting option too if their accuracy is improved...!

Anyway, Valve has listened to the community (the pistols problem has been discussed in depth on steampowered forums and elsewhere) and therefore gets +1 for this change. Can't wait :)

                  lol valve!

the usp is as nearly as effective (for example) but which counter-terrorist would buy it if he has it already?

so if the want to update their pistol they buy deagles because it's the best pistol, not because it is too much better than the others...

stupid dynamic pricing and stupid updates. valve should update netcode, hitboxes and gameplay issues... sometimes i think they dont see the reality, or let me say see the game from the gamers view...

That's great that they are acknowledging something was going bad with pistol-DWP, at least now we know there is someone out there watching the mess and willing to do something.

I'm not sure the beefed up pistols will be enough to balance the deagle put that was probably the only thing they could do, short of a massive gameplay change (stoping to give a free pistol for the first round for exemple) or a massive DWP-algorithm change (stoping to take pistol buying paterns in subsequent rounds into account for exemple as they consist mainly of deagle).

Isn't the idea of the game to be realistic? A Desert Eagle .50 is a powerful rhino stopper. You can't just make the other guns more powerful because people use the more powerful gun... I'm sorry but they're screwing up the game even more then they already had. CS:S is a mess.

There was mention of CS 1.6 being updated in the post though. A mistake by the looks thanks god!

So instead of fixing the DWP algorithm, they fix the guns. Hm..

The deagle may be the most useful, but whos going to save up 10 rounds to buy a deagle for one round, then lose it again, when the AWP is easily buyable on the second round (I'm guessing all of this, since I don't play on many pubs, much less DWP pubs.)

If you're going to argue the realism route, the Glock and 5-7 are woefully underpowered and inaccurate in CS. Yes the deagle is powerful, but those guns in-game versions are about as potent as a hairdryer.

Uh we shouldn't be talking realism when it comes to Counter-Strike anyway. Last time I checked, the game is far from realistic.
