    Steam News Article

Some news in the Steam world is the source of my post today. Is Valve finally cracking down on cheaters? Read on!
The Steam Hardware Survey was updated this week, which means we've begun collecting new data from Steam users about their computers. You can check out the survey results & compare your own rig to the community at large.

New Valve Anti-Cheat technology caught a few people cheating in Counter-Strike: Source and other games this week — over 10,000. VAC detects anyone using cheat software and permanently bans their Steam account. We expect to see a surge of forum posts laying blame squarely at the feet of "my little brother."

Glad to see some more cheaters get banned. Go valve, send them to the abyss!

So, when one's steam account get's banned, what happens to them? Is it just no more playing online in CS, or all of Valve's games online?

Well it bans their steam acct Im guessing from all games that use SteamIDs.

I wonder how many people got banned that were not cheating. I remember that happened to me when 1.3 was released. It took a few phone calls and some hardware explaining to get it back.

Yeah, I've gotten a few bans from VAC in the early beta stages of it, but that was back when they were still banning for memory inconsistency errors. After they stopped doing that, and I got a far more reliable PC, I haven't had any trouble with false positives since.

That said, a month or so ago I was having problems with CZ shutting down and giving me an error message claiming I didn't own the game, lol. For reference, I own both CZ and the Silver HL2 pack that includes CZ, heh, so that was an annoying little glitch for a bit...

But yeah, glad to see a bunch of cheaters cleared out in one fell swoop. Now the question is going to be whether they can use fake keys to create new steam ids, or whether they're gonna have to shell out daddy's hard-earned cash once again. :)

10,000? That's almost as many people as HLamp and HLirc got banned :-)
