Weekly Steam News - October 13

Ooooh, it's Friday the 13th! Spooooooky! Ahem, well anyway on with the show. This week, Valve hit us hard and heavy with a plethora of new releases on Steam.
This was a big week for new games on Steam. Four major titles from Activision - Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty, Call of Duty: United Offensive, and Gun - are available now. Also released this week were Psychonauts and City Life. Psychonauts is the critically acclaimed and wildly imaginative psychic adventure created by Double Fine studios. City Life is a visually stunning city building and simulation game that's sure to keep you glued to your monitor for a very long time.

The Counter-Strike: Source dynamic weapon pricing beta is underway now, so if you want to get a look at what weapon prices will be when we update the rest of the community, fire up the beta right from your Steam games list. (Look for "Counter-Strike: Source Beta.") Starting next week, prices in the beta will be adjusted daily in order to test that part of the system, but once the system is released publicly it will stick to weekly changes.

Something that caught our eye recently is a project by some students at Northwestern University using the Source engine to automatically create a three minute news broadcast, called News at Seven. Without any human intervention, their system automatically gathers all of the relevant data for the broadcast and creates a short newscast anchored by Half-Life 2 characters. Check out the ABC news story about the system, or watch Alyx and Eli deliver a newscast.
I'm in the process of downloading Psychonauts. I hope it's as good as the critics say it is. I even picked up a new controller just to play it. Go me?

I'm rather curious as to if we'll see any future Activision games appearing on Steam. Perhaps a PC version of Call of Duty 3? I wouldn't mind that. I guess I should wait to see if there is a confirmed CoD3 game for the PC or not before I get my hopes up.

Maybe the map he was making just turned out to not be any fun to play.

That, they gave up, or they're still making it.

Nah, they want to work on the bugs 1st!

              Shadows

              Clipping

              defuse bug

              fake reload sound

tweak all the guns (m3 = bad)

              hostage AI

                The M3 owns.

And, you should see the clipping and sound issues on Battlefield 2. People's legs go straight through thin walls, and people run around with a constant firing sound going on for a few minutes while not actually firing.

When I heard that Steam would be having Call of Duty 2 I thought "Great, I don't have to get the boxed version in town for $18.50, I can just download it"

Now it seems that Steam wants to charge mroe than twice that....

....off to the shops I go :)

Oh my God. BF2, dont even get me started. I squeal in agony when ragdolls fall down ladders.

Anyways the CS:S nnew pricing thing sounds pretty sweet, although I doubt many servers will use it...

Who cares about CoD3, the graphics are worse than CoD2.

OMG! NEXT GEN! XBOX 360! LEET HAX! Wait a minute, CoD2 looked better! Fuck this.

Indeed, but based on Steam's prior pricings, this isn't even remotely surprising.

Fall? Yeah right, they just get stuck there. BF2 has one of the worst ragdolls I had ever seen, although it's justified considering the size of the game.

Also, I turned on the BETA thing, and there's only one server running it. Doesn't look like it'll get anywhere.

Good. Hopefully Valve will abandon the idea entirely and apologize for even proposing something so stupid.

                            CoD 3

Looks to me like CoD 3 looks quite a bit better.
