    CPL Offering Free Spectator Passes

Angel Munoz of the CPL, has just passed along word to CS-Nation that there will be 1,000 free spectator passes given out for this year's CPL 2006 Championship Finals.
These free spectator passes will be available online commencing, Thursday, August 31, 2006 at www.thecpl.com/register/?page=freepass&eventid=21 on a first-come, first-serve basis only.

"AMD and ATI's support has not only allowed us to offer our lowest admission price in seven years, but also offer free spectator passes to a larger number of people," said Angel Munoz, Founder and President of the CPL. "We believe that as we announce activities planned for the Championship Finals, the community of gamers will realize the true value of this offer."
Be sure and check back nice and early once the giveaway starts on Thursday to ensure your free spectator pass. The CPL 2006 Championship Finals will take place December 13th through December 17th at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dallas.

Am I being lead to believe that at one point people actually PAID to stand around and watch other people play games?

No you are being led to believe that people *still pay* to be a spectator at CPL events.

There's a difference between paying to watch say, a top-level football match, and paying to see some people hammer through a few rounds of Counter Strike.

Actually...besides a lot of beer and really hot chicks, there really isn't that much difference between the two.

But yeah, I certainly wouldn't pay to just watch, either.

Is there not more than just CS'ing going on at CPL events, like stalls and pin the tail on the donkey game?

Apart from the popularity of them, not really. I'd prefer to watch people playing Counter-Strike than watching people play football. Not that I'd particularly want to watch either. Certainly wouldn't pay.

Competitve CS is the only sport I enjoy watching or playing. Aside from that, football is my next choice, but all sports are more fun to play than to watch, obviously...

You are right, one game is pompous millionaires playing for money. The other is friends playing to win.

I'd gladly watch some people play CS than watch and overpaid clown catch a ball and dance.
