    Steam Store v3 (BETA)

Remember the sneak peak of the Steam storefront that we mentioned a while back? The updated storefront is now in BETA stages and ready for your testing! You too can participate by clicking these words. You MUST use Internet Explorer when opting in to the storefront BETA, otherwise you won't get the new store to work within Steam. IE is required ONLY for the opt-in due to the beta needing to use a cookie within Steam. After you opt-in, you may use any browser of your choosing as you'll still be in the storefront BETA.

All questions, comments, and concerns can be directed to the Valve Wiki page. If you like what you see so far, be sure and give Valve's Chris Bokitch and Alden Kroll plenty of praise and unmarked, non-sequential bills next time you see them!

No, you only need to use Internet Explorer when you opt into the testing. You need it for the cookie it uses and for the fact the Steam news uses the IE renderer. You can use another browser once you "opt in."

That made me sad. I love seeing people pissed off about things like that, and it was going to be my entertainment for the night. Shame.

And now I'm sad. I wanted to see DarkViper try really hard to be an effective troll and then fail.

While I'll gladly accept cash and candy, I have to point out that the design was done by Alden Kroll, who is able to bend the will of HTML to his very whims. It's fearsome to behold, let me tell you.

I just make his designs go.

firefox is bad and you are helping bad people to become rich if you choose to use it.

IE is required once, to set the cookie, since the Steam client is tied to IE. It cannot read cookies set by Firefox. You don't need to set your default browser to IE or anthing. You just need to use IE once, then return to your regularly scheduled browser. Even if it's Firefox. ( )

This needs to be quoted and emphasized again for those that may overlook it (even if it is in the news post).

I don't really judge a product based on how rich it makes a person (although I don't see how your opinion doesn't apply to any other browser, especially IE), but I don't like firefox either, it's too slugish and feels like any other XP app.

Camino user here. Score one for the minority browsers!

By the way, I was wondering, would valve switch to something like OpenGL for their games if other operating systems (like OS X) gain more marketshare? I mean, after all, steam seems very closely tied to windows, what with the IE and DirectX and all.

Think about it though. Aren't all games "closely tied" to windows.

What with the Direct X and downloading patches and all?

Edit: Just opened it in IE to check it out. The menu on the right is mis-aligned in IE 7.0 beta2 :) Doesn't do that in Firefox. The "Get steam now" button does weird things as well..

Bad compression, sorry :-| But you get the point.

Try using Beta 3. It looks fine for me.
