It seems to me that the ship mod for HL1 was always just a proof of concept, a taste of the game-- and that they always intended to release a full featured version.
For $15 people should grab this, it will be one of those unique experiences in gaming that Im sure people will get into. Not only that but you'll be supporting an upstarting innovative game company.
It's too bad valve is waiting for counter strike source to get stale, at least they are letting in games like this.Comment

As someone who played the original mod, and I do go back to it from time to time, I'm not going to be purchasing the game. I echo washuplushie's comment of "pay for mods that aren't necessarily good enough to warrent purchase". As fun as the mod was from time to time, it is a one trick pony. I cannot see how they could have improved the game, nicer graphics and gameplay tweaks yes. But I don't think the concept is strong enough for a retail release.
If you saw this game in a store, and it wasn't on Steam, would you buy it? Even for $15? Would there be other games of the same price that were better? Why do people leap at games just because they're on Steam? I'm sure the convenience factor plays into it a lot, but people should take a step back whilst looking at their purchases.Comment

hahnchen no one is buying it because they see it as conveinent, at least I hope not. They'll be buying it because it's a good game and a great concept-- I dont see how you can judge all this from playing the hl1 mod that was released ages ago
telling people not to purchase this game, what's the matter with you? You sound like some one who is just sore because you don't want to fork over the cash yourself
I don't even game anymore and I lit up when I saw that a new version of the ship was going retailComment

The gameplay hasn't changed from the hl1 mod that was released ages ago. It's still fundamentally the same thing with fancier graphics. Sure, there are many games in this boat (or ship), but I just don't feel that the gameplay was strong enough to warrant a retail release.
I might sound like I'm sore because I don't want to hand over the cash, but I'm not. I just don't want the game and can't see its appeal. And I actually thought the original was a bit of fun. I just don't think it had enough gameplay ideas, or fun to be successful in the retail market.
The thing about convenience, I'm sure is true. Apart from the great publicity Steam generates for little games, it also places them a click away from a potential customer. Just like the chewing gum you bought because it was on display at the checkout aisle, but with games. Even if The Ship had a crapload of publicity and wasn't being released on Steam, I'm sure people will be buying it because it's cheap and a click away. Whereas, if you're in a shop, you see a lot more that's on offer.Comment
