Valve is unleashing a new file system at some point in the near future. Ditching the slower method of using GCF files, the new file system is currently in a BETA phase and can only be used with the game Red Orchestra.
The major improvement with the new file system is the decrease of loading times. Some users have reported improved load times that are upwards of 3 times as fast as before. Not too shabby, eh?
If you elect to take part in the BETA, you should note that the Red Orchestra files will be moved to a new folder called "common" in your SteamApps folder. The Red Orchestra GCFs that used to exist are now smaller NCF files taking up less than 1MB. Keep in mind, that for the BETA, the original GCFs remain in case you opt out of the BETA system. Once the final version is released, these GCFs will not be there.
So what do you need to partake in the BETA for testing and bug finding purposes? You should make sure the tail end of your Steam command line resembles the following:
