    Game Informer's Episode 1 Preview

Game Informer recently made a trip to Valve to get the latest on Half-Life 2: Episode 1 before its release on the 1st. The preview provides a number of details about the game. I suppose a spoiler warning may be necessary before you go read it, but there's nothing exceptionally major spoiled there. You've been warned though.

There are over 40 new screenshots from the game, and a five part interview with Valve's Robin Walker that features some gameplay footage spliced in. Robin hits upon such subjects as the way the episodes will play out, what to expect in terms of story progression, the design choices made for Alyx, some of the graphical and technological strides made since Half-Life 2, and what to expect in the future.

There are a number of interesting points from the five part interview. Throughout the videos you can see a Zombine in action along with other gameplay elements. There was also a statement from Robin saying that there will be a higher graphical setting above the current "high" setting in Episode 1. This is to make better use of the newest graphics cards on the market currently. In addition, there are some upgrades to DirectX 7 graphics and performance. Alyx also has somewhere around 2.5 times the number of animations she had in Half-Life 2, and 3 times the texture budget.

Oh yeah... there was mention in the 5th video about Team Fortess. Nothing beyond an "Absolutely" for it still being worked on. No specifics. I don't understand the huge secrecy behind it unless they don't have any work done on it... I'd hate for that to be the case though.

Anyone else think the graphics shown in these screenshots look extremely dated? After playing FEAR, BF2, and other newer FPS games, Episode 1 just looks like ass.

Oh, and there's more Alyx in it so it's guaranteed to be shit-awful.

no shit, i can do 1st grade arithmetic myself. what i'm saying is if anyone honestly believes that it would take 18 years to produce a new game is kidding themselves. I mean it might be another 3 or 4, but 18? they already have an engine designed to be upgraded with new technology that's also a solid base, so they wouldn't have to do a complete redesign. All they'd really need to do is enable some self-shadowing parallax mapping and motion blur and then they're set for their next release other than mapping and play testing.

EDIT: the engine has some minor code for parallax mapping in it, it's just unfinished. there's a command to enable it somewhere but it doesn't do anything AFAIK.

i'd be willing to trade her for the SiN girl, tho.

Does anyone else think that these screenshots spoiled way too much about episode one? First of all, we now know breen is alive. We know that the big hideous slug thing he was talking to on his monitor is really hiding in some kind of chamber thing in the citadel. We know that dog is making a return. We also know what to expect for like the first 10 mins of gameplay by looking at the order of the screenshots. All in all this seems like something that valve would never have done with HL2 or any other game for that matter before release. If they spoiled this much then wth can't they spill the beans on TF2???? If you ask me, I think they're just afraid that it will never be able to match up to CS, no matter how popular it used to be.

We have spoiler tags for a reason. I also put it in a disclaimer there may be spoilers in that preview.

It also wasn't Valve that took these shots, it was Game Informer.

It has to be IDENTICAL to what it is on the card. It generally isn't Steam that denies based on address or something like that, it's usually through the verification with your bank.
