Atari Gets Steamed Up

Atari has recently announced a plan to bring a number of Atari's PC titles to Steam users for the low price of $20 a pop. Atari plans to distribute its Gamers First titles via the Steam content delivery system, beginning June 1st.

GamersFirst will begin on June 1st at participating retailers and will include a new price point of $19.99 on all existing console titles for PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Xbox video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Nintendo GameCube(TM), and Game Boy® Advance as well as all existing Windows titles (excluding the recently launched Dungeons & Dragons Online). Additionally, all Windows titles included in the program will be available for immediate download at Valve and Direct2Drive, also for $19.99.

You can see the partial list of titles right here. There will be more titles added to the list come June 1, possibly including the more recently released Indigo Prophecy.

It's no wonder they're shelling out games for that much, they've been "going bankrupt" for the last 3 years.

Driver was fun, 6 years ago. But $20? I can get it for £2.99 in the shops. No thanks, Atari need to add more appealing titles (Unreal for instance) and vary the price per title.

Indigo Prophecy costs 20 bucks new already. It's worth picking up by the way. The atmosphere in that game is awesome.

If they start selling Unreal Tournament games through Steam, then I'll be impressed.

I think $20 is WAYYY too much for games like those listed from their site. $10 USD sounds a little more reasonable.

There's a high possibility UT2004 will be on the list. An earlier press announcement seemed to indicate this would include all earlier titles except the aforementioned D&D Online.

UT2004 would be impressive though. It would be interesting to see UT2007 compete with Half-Life episode 2 on Steam...
