It's only $10 bucks. I don't see why this is a big deal.

I think the real worry here is what Garry is going to do with $10.snkcube wrote..
That's really besides the point. Think of the community that was made under Garry's mod. It's selfish to think that Garry can just pack up everything we've contributed and sell it.

Think back to Counter-Strike. Did gooseman make us ever pay for CS? No, as long as you had Half-Life you were good to go.Comment

luckily, since Garry's Mod is little more than a sandbox mod with little to no actual content created by Garry or his team, a carbon copy of Garry's Mod can, and will be easily created soon after Gmod is no longer free.
In fact, I hope multiple versions of Gmod-clones are produced as a mega fuck-you to Valve for even thinking about trying to profit off what is essentially a community effort.Comment

It's selfish to think that Garry owes you anything. I'm sure GMod had a load of community support, but the hours of entertainment that the mod gave them easily counters their support.

Everything who's contributed? He's pretty much redoing the mod from scratch isn't he?Comment

Grow up the lot of you.
Garry has spent a lot of time, money and effort to bring his mod to where it is today, the least you can do is support him in his ventures. How many people have you met that have offered such dedication in terms of introducing a whole new scripting concept to a pretty much preset game. You don't want to buy it, then don't buy it, no one is forcing you to, but we are realising the potential that steam now has in terms of hard working authors selling and distributing their content.Comment

Oh because Half-Life 2 would be a great game if I had to pay $10 for every mod I downloaded. I liked it when Valve promoted mods, not when they bought them out and asked us to pay $10 for it.
As I said, there are PLENTY of ways to make money for your hard work without making us pay up. CSNation's profit practically pays for Rizzuh to go to college (or so I've heard).
In my opinion it's a horrible decision to suddenly make someone pay for something that has been free the whole time. It's like giving someone a taste of something and taking it away. I've been playing Half-Life mods since CS was in its beta stages, and now I'm expected to start paying for mods?Comment

It says it on the front page.
I think what you're looking for is an official news post by Valve about it.
A post on Garry's blog on April 3rd (www.garry.tv):Maybe I’m an old cunt but I don’t see the point in real April Fools. Wouldn’t it be better to make a real announcement on April Fools day that everyone thought was an April Fools because it’s so unexpected? That way everyone that thinks they’re not being fooled are actually fooling themselves. Like a pre-planned fool reversal.
So all you April foolers are probably getting April fooled!Comment

From the G-mod site:
I don't see what all the fuss is about. Imagine it like this: G-Mod is remaining free, but discontinuing development. Some other program with a similar (but expanded) feature set will be offered for $10 over Steam. If you like G-Mod, you're still fine, you don't have to pay for it like it is now. If you want continued advancement of the program and more features, they'll cost you a mere 10 bones.
Garry's Mod, the Source-powered physics sandbox famed across the games industry, is to be sold over Steam for $10 US, with profits split evenly between Garry and his team of contributors and Valve. What is currently known as version 9.1 will lose its number and become the initial paid release, while the current version (9.04) will remain as a free demo.
Seriously... as much as I find Garry to be a distateful human being, the outrage over him trying to make a few bucks for his hundreds of hours of effort is rather ridiculous and petty.Comment
