Hey, smart move on VALVe's part. Something like this wouldn't have been feasible without Steam.

Too bad it's no good for me and my 56k connection. Heck, I can't even play vanilla CS 1.6 without random spiking to 800 ms and I'm paying in spades for my dial-up ISP. I have no idea how Nighthawk does it... =/

    ...HOW?!

But CS weapons are hitscan and the netcode retroactively compensates for hits or something, right? Which is why it's sometimes possible to still take hits and die a second after having taken cover behind an impenetrable material.

But anyways, I'm talking about my ping going from a relatively stable and playable 200-300 ms and intermittently spiking to 1000-2000 at random intervals in a game. Sometimes I can play a match perfectly smoothly but more often than not I freeze up at least once per minute.

valve is trying to fix it. it has something to do with the netcode. trust me we are all anoyed by this issue. the thing i noticed is the hosts of the game never have this problem. because their ping is so low and things run so good. weird problem, fixable but unfortunatly hard to. give them time, they will work it out. not every game is perfect yet.

I have it, and it's not that great in my opinion. I think it's going to cost Valve more in bandwidth than the sales of the game it will encourage.

i bet they won't even get 2:1 ratio.

they as in people who has never played DOD before.
*sigh* Why should a DoD player be any different from a CS player ?

The game requires the same reaction time.

The game requires less recoil control than cs (minus MG's).

            People die easier and faster.

If you have game-sense you are set.

You make it sound like the game is impossible. Any decent player can adapt quickly to any FPS, all they need is good reaction time a good lock on aim / body tracking and good game-sense.

It is you who is the idiot sir, not me. In fact, you strike me as the type of person who would struggle to play any other FPS, of course, if you did then you would know all of the above already wouldn't you?........

To be fair, that was CS1.3 before Steam and everything else. I still played on 56k through version 1.6 (did the full downloads of Half-Life, CS, etc. through Steam), but it got progressively harder and harder to get a good connection, and I found myself limited to perhaps 5 servers that I could get decent pings to. Back in 1.3 with a good 56k connection, I could ping around 175 to one or two servers which was sufficient to deal out plenty of death.

I'm on an 8mbps cable connection now, though, so that pic is more reminiscent than anything else. The one thing I will say for my 56k days, though... it makes you work that much harder for your kills, and my reaction times at LANs were at their best when I was used to playing on a 56k. :)

yes sir! Free is always good What a great way to get people interested in a good looking game. I can't wait. I've been interested in testing it but didn't feel like paying just to test/play it!
