Sure you could make the argument that people who go into journalism enjoy what they do and knew what they were getting into or the argument that fatal1ty is setting his own practice schedule and he enjoys what he does, but why would you? That would make too much sense. Same goes with professional sports. They work extremely hard to stay as good as they are. Nobody accuses them of wasting their lives. I'll agree that language is important, and even though I like history and science I don't really need to know chemistry and memorize the metabolic pathways chart or to know all about the Ottoman empire. As for math, you don't even need Calculus in most professions.



To have some sort of childlike notion that extraneous knowledge is the most important thing in life and that knowing it is the only way to "do something worthwhile" with your life is stupid. If you don't think that you said that, you did. Reread what you said and maybe take another language class.

Perhaps I should clarify. When I say that he will end up wasting his life, I'm coming at this from a humanistic point of view, and a (if not the) fundamental principle of humanism was to read the classics (more modernly, to be liberally educated) in order to better one's self and hence society. This is the only path to truly being able to fulfill your potential. I guess you just have to buy in to this philosophy but I certainly don't see any glaring exceptions. This guy may have money but what will he really know after his time is up? How will he have made himself better? Betterment does not necessarily equal happiness, and I'm quite sure he may indeed be very happy. How will he have made society a better place? He may provide entertainment to a select few, but that's certainly not a lasting or significant impact (and before you start shouting hypocrite, I consider most professional athletes in a similar manner, save for those who actively seek to use their fame and talents to better society).

That's great, and sports/entertainment figures, in my opinion, have immense value when they inspire others to achieve and work to better society. However, Michael Jordan != this Wendel guy. Michael Jordan was a man who did much more than just play basketball. Wendel plays CS. And then he goes and plays more CS or whatever game it is that year. He'll wake up one day and realize he's essentially done nothing but this, and it certainly won't be fulfilling.
