Anyway, interesting interview, and neat to see media focus on gaming that isn't doomsday "gamers kill children!" propaganda.

And yet, he most likely earns a lot more than you.

It is a career, although not a particularly long one (since you tend to not be good enough by about 30), a not particularly recognised one (since most people see games as some stupid thing which only kids do), and not one which many people can have (because there's not enough money in it yet, only people extremely good at it can make a reasonable amount of money).

Eh? What... I wouldn't say you are washed up by 30.. But then again I'm slightly biased :P

the guy has won a lot of $ from them tournaments so i won't say anyting about that. but 98% of the people in the world don't have that kind of talent to make pro gaming their career. i'm sorry, but playing cs will pay the bills, lunch $ for the kids, GAS (grr), and etc... he's one of them rare people... yet i don't think he'll keep playing games forever despite what he's saying... when you age, you think completely different from what you were when you're in late 10s and 20s. if $ grew on trees hell we would all never have to work and game our pathetic lives away..

note: people who actually makes cs a job is a fool. skipping classes/courses for a session to play a clan match is just foolish. i'm sorry.. but education comes in a very long way in life.. no damn employer would care if he sees someone's resume that says

                  "CPL Gaming League"

for reals, life is one shot chance.

hey Ryosuke T, get the hell out of that ivory tower!

                    For reals:

"note: people who actually makes cs a job is a fool."

                    - Correct. But if they get paid to play good on them! & Good luck. :)

Personally I hate the whole E-Sports concept or whatever it's latest incarnation is called.

"skipping classes/courses for a session to play a clan match is just foolish."

                    - More words of wisdom, I agree people should concentrate on getting qualifications for real life. But who gives a shit about real life? It's over rated. :P The point of education before CS is a moot one. Why bother bringing it up?

"for reals, life is one shot chance."

Jon's winnings to date have been more than most of you will make in the next 10 years of your life. What's more... he's having fun doing it.

A few of you could stand to look in your wallets, think about how exactly you'll be paying for your college education, and then come back and type up your brave claims of him being foolish. When you're done with that, hopefully you can get up from sitting in front of your parents' computer and feel better about yourself as you take the bus to your minimum-wage job.

If you're having trouble paying for college then you should come to Florida. We have 100% scholarships as long as you get a 1270 on the SAT.

nighthawk is right. it is foolish to think you can be just like Wendel. the truth is, a very very small portion of people can, smaller than the amount of famous football players. It is not because you are not good enough, its just that its a much smaller field than football and has less attraction. Not to mention, looks do go a long way. Wendel may not be a Brady, but he doesnt look bad at all (decent at least). Most of you cant say that for yourselves.

Dont ever give up on education, that is what Ryosuke is saying. The chances are slim. Sorry, but thats reality. Im happy for Wendel and he had found his bread, but im just not expecting any of you(or myself) to rise to his status.

I think the outrage comes from guys who do NOT have minimum wage jobs. The point is it just seems stupid to play video games all your life; I mean, if that's what you want to do, fine, and good luck to you. All things in moderation (I know I would rip my hair out if I played CS 9 hours a day, let alone more than 2). Get an education - no, not so you can just get a job, so you can (imagine this) be educated.

One thing I hate about most of the people at my high school is that they just waste it. Education is not just about getting a good job so you can have money, there is a much higher value in knowing language, history, mathematics, the sciences, etc. than saying "I f***ing rocked at CS, but I didn't have time to actually do something worthwhile with my life because I had to practice it 9 hours a day". Just my two cents.

In the end he'll have missed out on 10, 20, 30 years of his life and for what? So he can drive a porsche up to his mom and say "ha, I can twitch my fingers faster than everyone else so I alone managed to make some money!"

If you don't like putting in 9 hours a day I implore you to not go into a job like journalism because you'll just be missing out on "10, 20, 30 years" of your life. Sure you could make the argument that people who go into journalism enjoy what they do and knew what they were getting into or the argument that fatal1ty is setting his own practice schedule and he enjoys what he does, but why would you? That would make too much sense. Same goes with professional sports. They work extremely hard to stay as good as they are. Nobody accuses them of wasting their lives. I'll agree that language is important, and even though I like history and science I don't really need to know chemistry and memorize the metabolic pathways chart or to know all about the Ottoman empire. As for math, you don't even need Calculus in most professions.

To have some sort of childlike notion that extraneous knowledge is the most important thing in life and that knowing it is the only way to "do something worthwhile" with your life is stupid. If you don't think that you said that, you did. Reread what you said and maybe take another language class.

Now it's finally become an interesting discussion. Here's the points (and counter-points) that people have been trying to make, as far as I can see them:
                                • Playing video games professionally can, for a very select few, be a lucrative career.

                                • However, just as most basketball players will never get paid for their game, likewise most gamers realistically don't have a shot at being pro cyberathletes.

                                • It's beneficial to have an education to fall back on if things don't pan out for you no matter what career path you choose.

                                • There are benefits to an education that apply to life, not just your career.

                                • Simply being educated for the sake of being educated probably won't give you any more sense of purpose or value to your life than doing something you enjoy will.

                                • No matter what you choose to do with your life, if you don't have any sense of purpose or "doing something worthwhile" then you're likely to end up looking back at life and feeling empty.
I'd tend to agree that the education end of things is sorely lacking in American society (and, judging from the European folks I've met around these parts, they unfortunately aren't in much better shape). Like Gpig, I'd tend to agree that the random, "well-rounded" education philosophy often is irrelevant to anything we'll experience in life.

That said, basic skills are very lacking in those I meet. The ability for people to use the English language, especially in written form, has been markedly diminishing for some time now. I also come across people on a regular basis who can't do even the most elementary math problems in their head. Honestly, both of those are skills which are frequently needed in life.

Realistically though, if you haven't mastered both of those skills by the time you've finished highschool, there's little chance that your college education is going to make up for the lack. Aside from that, it's a pity there aren't classes to teach people social skills, as there are quite a few people who lack in that department as well. :)
