Friends Network Coming Soon (Again)

There are signs over at the Gabe Newell FAQ that the updated and working Friends Network is nearing completion. This little piece of information, along with other tasty morsels, will be sure to tickle you in places that only Loretta normally could.

Q: Can I use the upcoming snow shader for DOD:S in my MOD?

A: Yes. The snow shading makes use of two new material parameters (plus art) that will be usable in any source engine game when released.



Q: Is it true Uwe Boll has the rights to make a Half-Life movie?

A: Uh, no. And whoever is winding people up with this rumor, please stop giving out my home phone number.



Q: Will there be any new content for HL2M?

A: Yes. It's gated on a team finishing up work on an unannounced project.



Q: Will the riot shield come back for CS:S?

A: I doubt it.



Q: Will Friends ever work again?

A: John Cook is finishing this up now.

Even with the good news about the Friends Network, the new content for HL2: DM, and the new snow effects, I am probably more excited that Uwe Boll won't be laying a finger on any Half-Life movie adaptation!

Friends network coming back? Sweet! I lost a lot of my on-line friends with the switch to source.

Too bad about the riot shield. I liked it and server admins could always dissable it if they didn't want it.

Bah, I really liked the shield. Probably didn't work out too well because of the exploit, but then again there were no weapons on the T side to counter it.

Yeah friends network is a little too late now. Xfire took over when it failed. Although I guess it could still be usefull.

Given that a couple of his films rank up there on the Bottom 100 list (#16 and #36 at the time I'm writing this) at IMDb, it's safe to say we're all glad (though unsurprised) that Uwe Boll won't lay a dirty finger on the rights to this video game. That said, I still have this sick morbid curiousity that tempts me to watch the trainwreck that is Bloodrayne.



Friends is quite honestly the biggest thing I've been hoping to see in CS for quite some time. Back in the 1.4 BETA, Tracker worked very nicely, and added a lot to the game I felt. Things like Xfire, while a nice attempt, don't have the same "absolutely everyone who plays CS has it" feature that Friends can boast. And hey, isn't it more fun to play CS when you can just right-click on a buddy and join whatever game he's playing instead of pubbing with complete strangers?



I thought Friends was the best addition since CS1.1 did voicecomm in terms of strengthening the player community, and increasing my enjoyment of the overall experience. It's been sad to see it gone these past what, 2 years? If the return truly will be soon, in a far less buggy form than it quit in, it will be a happy day for me. :) That said, this is our beloved VALVe we're talking about, so I'm not gonna get excited until I actually see people show up in my contact list.



Hopefully Mr. Cook will fix the chess rules, too... I've jumped pawns over queens and stalemated my opponent's lone king at the end of HIS turn, lol. Screenshots of both, of course. Good times... :)

For that whole Xfire arguement... I admit, I use it quite often, and actually started using it when Friends started to die in the beginning.



The problem is though, it's a bit of a chore to connect to a friend's server when you're already in a game. The Friends Network will hopefully cover in-game playing as well as Xfire currently covers out of game.
