  • Interview with Valve's Mike Dunkle

A website by the name of Computer Games has recently conducted an interview with Valve's Mike Dunkle. Some of the hot topics include the increase in the public acceptance of Steam, the future of the Half-Life series, and the continuing development of the Source engine.
ComputerGames: Did you expect other producers to be interested in using Steam as a delivery platform for their games?

Mike Dunkle: Actually, Steam was conceived from day one with 3rd party games and content in mind, whether it’s games or other content, like mods and so on, not just for Valve titles. However, we did first have to prove that the system was viable with our games before they decided to use Steam as well [Laughs]. In this regard, our success with Counter-Strike 1.6 and Half-Life 2 proved essential for Steam.
You'll more than likely pick up a few more interesting bits of info once you read the rest of the Computer Game's article. I know that I sure did!

Good interview, although CG should have stuck to steam development questions rather than product stuff, he was clearly unwilling or unable to provide any such information.

Mostly fairly general information, really, but a good interview all the same.

Just had a random additional thought... the comment about not working on a replacement for CS... is that more or less killing the idea of CS2, or is that just saying that all products in their lineup will be continuation of the Counter-Strike name, whether new or not?
