Every little update helps. Hope they're working on updating Day of Defeat: Source though too. (i.e. getting rid of the stutter when you walk into another player).

Sounds more like a driver issue then a game issue.. But what do I know..

I had that problem until I finally figured out how to comphensate for the flawed design of the game engine via the command line. The HL2 engine tries to initialize full-screen at 800x600 at the refresh rate that your desktop is currently using. If you're using a refresh rate fix of any sort to keep many games from running at a headache-inducing 60hz, then often its attempt to switch into this mode will fail, and it won't detect available refresh rates for that resolution and then use one of them.

So, at least for my case of exactly that same problem, I had to force the startup resolution via the launch options. Right-click on the game, select Properties, then the Launch Options button, and put in something like this:

                            -w 1280 -h 1024 -refresh 85

Where the first number is the horizontal resolution, the second number is the vertical resolution, and the final number is your desired refresh rate.

Your other option is simply to go to the video settings tab within HL2 after you launch it, and select full-screen along with the current resolution that your desktop is running at. Most of the time it will launch into that one and only mode in full-screen just fine. Try to change that without hard-coding it into the launch options, though, and it'll revert back to windowed crap mode.

Might not be your particular problem, but I thought I'd at least put it out there for you to try.

Hooray, I can play HL2 and CS:S again. I know, I know, switch over to XP Pro. I will next June. I will.
